wire harness (what is it) 700

Hello. On a 86 740gle 4cyl nonturbo what is the wire harness that connects under the distributor cap? It runs from there to the drivers side and connects into another larger connector. Also there are openings in the back of the engine just under the distributor cap. What are these? I think this wire harness connector is suppose to snap into one of these. It's now hanging freely. If it is unplugged the engine will not start. Couldn't find answer in the faqs. I've noticed a lot of wires including these are missing insulation. Can't be good. Thanks in advance for any help. seya

What your describing sounds like the hall sensor connector. Look here.

Your year group is a candidate for bad wiring harness. I replaced mine(85 740gle nonturbo). Got a used one, $170. New are close to $400. Look here for a description.
