trans removal help! 700 1989

Im removing the transmission on an 89 780 turbo and can no get the top bolt on the starter motor off. Are there any tricks to this? Im loosing my mind with the damn thing. Also, the other two hard-to reach bolts on top of the trans bell have yet to be removed. Are there any tricks for them?

I succeeded doing this with a offset 6 point box wrench with a 2 foot piece of steel tubing of it for more leverage, and the hood in the vertical position.

Drop the crossmember support and the tranny will tilt down to give plenty of clearance for a 1/2" drive socket with 3 feet of extension. The starter may or may not have a nut on the bolt.

got the starter off, are there any tips for the other 2 upper bolts? there doesnt seem to be enough room between them and the firewall for a socket or breaker bar of any decent size. Also, I am removing an AW (70 I believe?) automatic rather than the manual. I imagine theres some dimensional differences between 740's/60's and 80's, perhaps theres a special trick for the 780?

Do it just like he said - you need a six-sided socket and about 3 feet of 1/2" extension. Remove the transmission crossmember and lower the rear of the transmission onto your jack until you have enough room to get your socket and extensions into place.

      Hi:

I recently did it the way rhaire described, mine is a Standard M46. It was easy after that. Use a Tranny or Floor jack and let it down only far enough to get at the bolts. Place the jack so the Tranny is balanced when it comes loose. If you let it down too far the Distributor Cap may hit the Firewall possibly breaking it. Like rhaire said, use a long 1/2 extention. Those suckers are tight. I also used another floor jack under the Engine Oli Pan, with a block of wood. To keep the engine coming down with a bang once the Tranny was separated. I used 4 Jackstands (Jacked high), two floor jacks with wooden blocks and alot of muscle. You might have a more civilized arrangement. If you are doing an Automatic. Remember, you have a Conveter to disconnect from the Flexplate. Tie it off so it doesn't fall out when you separate it.

      Warren
