Clean & Test Injectors? Or buy new ones? 200 1986

Has anyone had fuel injectors professionally cleaned & tested?

I'm formulating the gameplan for replacing my engine wiring harness. Since I'm removing the intake manifold, it seems like a convenient time to replace injector seals. And since I'm pulling them off to replace the seals, why not clean & test them?

I've read the procedure for testing them by letting them squirt into a mason jar. Umm, I'll pass. That sounds like a good recipe for a fiery experience.

It looks like the cost of getting them professionally cleaned & tested runs about 1/4 of what it'd cost to buy 4 new ones (~$100). Has anyone done this? Did you have it done locally or mail order? Did you feel it was worth it or should I save my pennies a little longer and spend $400 on new injectors?

Thanks!

Check out FCP Groton (www.fcpgroton.com) - they have new injectors (Bosch) to fit '86 (I have a '86 245) for $58.00 each. That puts them at $232.00 + S/H. If it were $50 to get them cleaned, then it might be more attractive. But when you can get new ones for a little more than twice the price of cleaning and testing, I would go for the peace of mind of new injectors.

Cheers,
Lance

I had my injectors done by a company called "cruzinperformance.com", it's a one man show and he does quality work. He's somewhere in Michigan I believe...(too lazy to check his site).

I think I paid something like $65 for all four injectors to be cleaned, balanced, sent there and back. I'm on the east coast so shipping may be less expensive. Each injector was $11 I think.

There are other places that people have recommended, I don't remember the names of them. Do a search for on the brickboard for "injector cleaning" or something to that effect. Regardless of the company you choose, the clean injectors will perform better than new.

Good luck,
Bean

I pulled mine out of my '90 240 and had them cleaned at a diesel injection specialty shop ( they work on gas burner injectors too).
The ultra sonically cleaned them, tested and put new seals and caps on them and came back working like new for about $18 ea.

Worth it.

Please disregard 200 1986

I had posted a reply but I was confused or actually just not paying close enough attention. My reply was regarding mechanical FI so it was not applicable here. Hence I removed it. Sorry.

In almost all cases with the later B230F engine, the injectors rarely fail to the point where they need replacing. Volvo reccomends running a fuel additive at each tune-up and let the driving do the work. (this cleaner is not available from parts stores).
I've tested the injectors on my car, and everything worked fine. Be sure to re-connect the ground wire that is on the fuel rail to some other location before you start the test. Harness ground should go to both fuel rail and manifold, since these get removed when the rail is disconnected.
I found that the injectors for the '89- are so infrequently replaced that they are special order from the dealer and are not listed in any parts stores. They just don't wear out. Mine list for $245/ea from Volvo. Pre-89 may be a different story.
If you think you have injector problems, replace the seals, run the addditive first, then the test if it still looks like a problem.
I wouldn't waist $$'s on a flush w/injectors off the car.

I had my injectors blueprinted by Marren Fuel Inection(http://www.injector.com/) for ~$100, mail order. Injectors were returned with seals installed and a data sheet.
I'd say it was worth it; the car idles noticeably smoother.
