240 wagen master cyl. compatability. 200 1984

I have a 240 wagen and if you press hard on the brake pedal it wil eventually sink
and the brake failure light comes on. I am going to go ahead an bleed the brakes but I suspect the master cyl. may be going. brakes seem to work fine otherwise.
The question becomes... Can I use the master brake cyl. off different year
Volvos and if so what is the range? i.e. all 200 series only? or....?

thanks in advance.

Axel:

I think '78 to '90 all used the same M/C. The ABS cars from '90 on were different, and the outlets on the earliest cars were on the other side. My '79 and my son-in-law's '90 both have the same type, so I'd guess any in that range.

The reservoir on top may vary, because some run a pipe for the clutch hydraulics, others have a separate clutch reservoir. But the reservoirs will swap over - 2 rubber plugs on top of the cylinder.
If you are very clever/lucky you can replace the MC without needing to bleed the brakes. Leave the pipe unions slack, fill with fluid, push the pedal very gently several times but only by about 1/2 inch, until you have let the air bubble out of the leaking joints. Then tighten fully.

--Good info.. I have an auto so that might limit my choices!

---This would for sure save time and effort.. Air introduced at the reservoir would
take quite a bit of bleeding to get out I would think...

-----Thanks for your time. wish me luck! ;-)
