Coolant under vehicle 200

1989 240 240GL 204,000 miles.

Went out to the garage this morning to find a small amount of coolant on the floor. Its in the location where the front of the car would be.

My wife drove the vehicle to work. I went down and looked under the hood to determine where the coolant is coming from. All hoses and connections are tight. I can see some coolant on the Scan Tech splash gaurd right below the front of the engine.

I am right to assume the water pump may have given up.

From all the other posts, now is the time to do the timing belt and seals also.

Help on where the coolant is coming from.

My waterpump is leaking from the shaft bearing. It will leave a 1/2 cup of coolent on the ground but not noticed on engine,if I shut car off and wait 5min.and look at the inside of pully it's wet,but every thing else is dry.
Don't leak when engine is running but shut the engine off and it will leak into the pully and drip down to the ground hitting only the alt.belt.

Also, check your radiator closely. I had a small amount of coolant appear under the car in the same location as yours, which turned out to be a pinhole leak in the radiator. It was behind the fan and difficult to see.

Unless you know the tensioner has been replaced, it's due too. Wisdom on this BB says they're good for 150k - Volvo shortchanged me, mine went at 149. Adds maybe ten extra minutes to the timing belt/seals job plus $27-$40 depending on who you source the unit from. I got a Febi-Bilstein tensioner from IPD for the higher price.

The splash guard is a big bowl that can collect coolant leaking from any one of many places and pool it under the engine front. Remove it, get under there, and have a good look around with a small bright flashlight. Could be the pump, could be as simple as a loose hose clamp (we hope).

A water pump on its last legs will more often than not tell you so. Heard any unfamiliar noises lately? Do you have a block heater? They are fitted where there would normally be a freeze plug, and sometimes a leak will develop.

Erling.

Sounds like it to me. When she gets home, take a rag out and wipe the underneath side of the pump. If it's all green, then chances are the pump, or the seals have given way. Pump replacement isn't that tough, and only costs you 50 bucks or so for peace of mind.
