Hi, putting the oil cooler, on the engine to day.
Was wondering is there a special way to fill with oil(oil cooler),and how much oil should be used.
Should I just fill up to level on dip stick, and run engine a while. Than top off oil.
THANKS!!!

Kevie,
Makes no sense to go to the trouble to prime.
1) The cooler is thermostatically controlled at the engine side of the adapter at the filter. Nothing in the engine requires the oil flowing through it when cold start occurs. I suspect some oil does go in even when cold, but that's a dog a of a different fart.
2) I pretty much always drain the cooler when I change mah earl, and never prime the cooler. Looks like it would be a bitch to prime.
3) I doubt the stock turdbo oil coolers and lines hold a qt. Maybe 1/2 qt, maybe...lines and all. You want big boy oil volume, add a dual remote and bigass FL-1A filters.
4) I had a 4th point but ah forget....
Good luck!

I believe the cooler can mount in the same place on a n/a 240 as in a 240T, to the right side of the radiator, in front of the air box. There's a plastic panel that gets removed to put the cooler in. You just have to route the hoses around the airbox. Haven't done it yet but have seen them put there. At one time, IPD had a good description of how it goes.
I'm headded to the pick-a-part this weekend to get me one too.

I here you on being creative, just wanted to here some desirable places to mount.
I was thinking in front of radiator down low. Or on otherside of the radiator(passenger side).
Not sure where to mount.

The procedure listed in the shop manual for my BMW R100RT cautions against starting the engine with a dry oil cooler. The procedure on this is to disable the ignition and crank with the starter until the oil pressure light goes out (or I suppose oil pressure indicated on the gauge). Re-check oil level, hook ignition back up, and crank it up!
This might be a tad paranoid but I can understand the reasoning behind it so I suppose it couldn't hurt.
Have fun,
Justin B.

Sounds good,I will prime first. I can understand that this will fill cooler and remove air pockets.
Parinoia is why I asked, better to be safe, than sorry.
THANKS.

Justin, that's a good procedure, although on the Volvo, the filter (oil feed point to the oil cooler if installed) is on the low pressure side of the oil pump in the sump, so it wont make that much difference. You should, however, always fill the new filter with fresh oil to the top before installing. This allows the engine oil pressure to reach peak after a few cranks. Then re-check and fill after the cooler displaces the sump oil.

Yeah, I always "prime" the oil filters in everything. As far as the cooler is concerned I figured this procedure might apply as his cooler would be dry.
This procedure is outlined on the BMW as during an oil change you are "supposed" to insert a special bolt into the oil filter cover adapter which depresses the temperature valve allowing the oil to drain from the cooler. When the oil change is completed then the cooler is "dry" and need to be re-filled without the engine being under load. Once the cooler is filled, the special bolt is removed, the standard one reinserted, and everything is back to normal.
Regards,
Justin

Delighted to see someone still doing this. Do you mind me asking, where did you get your oil cooler? Can't find them anymore down here (Virginia, US)...

I bought a 244turbo, from a junkyard to get all the stuff I want.

What he said. Yeah where did you get it?
I've been looking for an oil cooler and find several from a B230FT in scrapyards which has the filter integral with the housing, but would like to find the external filter housing with lines and attachment to the block for a n/a 240. IPD once sold these, but not any more.
As far as oil change, you need to remove the lower hose from the oil cooler located to the right of the radiator to get the extra quart out of it. Without doing so, the oil sump drain cannot drain the cooler (I've had a few 740T's)
Regards, Pete

Hey Kevin,
Spot on dude. The oil coolers typically need about another litre (quart??? - me is speaking Canadian only).
