760gle V-6 engine tick 700

Hello, I am purchasing a one owner 760gle that has 169k on the clock. The car is perfect except for one fault. The engine makes a fairly loud valve tick when cold. It smoothe out when it gets warm. The engine is strong and runs very well. Is there anyone out there that has had the same problem? Is there a fix or an adjustment one can do to smooth out the noise? Any advise would be MUCH appreciated. thanks!

I have zero experience with this engine, but I do know they do not have hydraulic valve lifters, and they do have adjustable valve clearance. I would start by checking the valve clearance.

I would certainly start with valve adjustments too.
The older type V6 is known for it's bad lubrication in the back of the heads (firewall side. Engine from 1988 onwards have less problems.
See also the FAQ about the PRV engine.
The overhead cams are lubricated through little holes and so are the valvelifters.
The holes in the cam and in the lifters can get plugged partially or completely when the car is only used for short distances for a long period of time.
This can cause bad lubrication in a cold engine and will eventually wear out the backlifters and later on the camshaft.
They can get hot and might be the cause of an overheating engine.
The noise you mention could be an indication and can be looked into when you remove the headcover.
First of all keep this engine lubricated with a good oil and change more often then the manual prescribes.
Give the car a good spin every once in a while and watch the tempgauge.

John
