240 Rod Bearings 200 1983

My neighbor the Volvo / Volkswagen mechanic and I replaced my rod bearings this weekend, (this one was the worst) because of a slight knock. And I do mean slight. When I pulled the oil pan I was shocked to say the least. It looked as if I had struck the mother load, only it was copper instead of gold.

Now after everything was cleaned, checked for extra bits, and buttoned up I still have the knock. Only it's even more quiet. But it's still there. We're guessing that the rod might be a little egg shaped from the looks of the bearing.

That brings me to my question. I'm having trouble finding a rod, except for the (You want HOW MUCH!?!?) Dealer.

Are there any aftermarket or internet sites that I can purchase from? Or is having it machined a viable option?

    The knock you're hearing might be wrist pin noise. If your neighbor's car is an '83, then it's either a B21FT or a B23F. These are not known for piston slap. But if neighbor's car has the B230, then you might be hearing a slightly sloppy piston.

    Does it get better/worse/same as the engine warms?

    What happens when you load/unload the engine?

    Before finding, buying, and replacing a connecting rod, why not use plasti-gage to see if the original is outta round? Or even an inside mic?

      Actually the car is mine... Well let me rephrase that. Actually my wife has laid claim to it!

      The engine is a B21FT, and I initially thought it might be the wrist pin. It does get louder as the engine warms, and there's little or no noise during load/unload. Just at that happy medium "in between" acceleration and deceleration.

      I'm still waiting on all the parts. I'll be un-buttoning her this weekend and have a better idea on how to proceed from there.

      Thanks for the help/ideas. I've been lurking about 6 months and these are my first posts. What a plethora of fantastic information. And as of yet... no flames! What a treat!

        The fact that the noise happens during the on -off throttle time shows it is a wrist pin bushing. They get beat out oval on the turbos.
        Flames happen. Don't sweat it. Some people are here just to do that.

    I'm surprised you did not take out the crankshaft and have a machine shop turn it for roundness in both the main and rod bearing areas. Then you could install oversize main and rod bearings.
    I bet you are bound to do it again and correctly this time.

      Surprisingly enough the crank had no visible damage. Very shiny. I guess it's true about them being bullet proof!

      And you're right about the 'next' time. Since I'm going to have the engine apart enough to replace the rod, I plan on replacing the rings, mains, of course the "one time good deal" head bolts, front and rear seals. I'll also mic the crank for just to make sure that it's correct. And what ever else needs done.

      Then there's the nitrous injector that I... "What's that honey? No Nitrous... But... But..."

      Oh well, maybe next time.

      Did you get a chance to see the bearing? It's in the "technical" section. Should be right on top, titled "240 Turbo".

      Oh... what about machining or purchasing? Any thoughts?
