Changing the starter 700 1991

I have my 91 744T all buttoned up with new plugs, new pressure regulator and new intake gasket and she runs great. But i fear the starter is on its way out from my adventure last night.

Suffice it to say i cranked the shit out of it, and in fact had the key turned and starter engaged but the engine didnt turn at the time due to gas locking the cylinders.

The starter turns the engine over now, but its barely fast enough, and once i stop cranking (when the engine turns over) i hear a wierd almost grinding/winding down sound i never heard before (i assume its starter related).

So can anyone point me in the direction of good starters, and more importantly where on the car its located/ how to remove it.

Driver's side, near the firwall and under the intake a ways. You will have to deal with the bell housing bolts that serve as the starter attachment bolts. This will require a long set of extensions and an approach from under teh car and to the rear by the transmission. It can seem daunting the first time, but it is doable. Unhook your battery cables and then the starteer electrics first.

Thanks for the help and pictures guys. I have a green manual for the volvos....but alas i lost it during my move. Wish i would have thought about the oil trick...i started it beforehand already so its too late to dump some oil in it....i'm pretty suprised that my sump isnt full of gas right now, but its time for an oil change nonetheless

I'll probably just order a starter and keep this one in the meantime till i have a bit more time ( my 940 is crying for a brake caliper due in tomorrow).

    Al:
Of course you have the Bentley manual,no??? I am betting you don't otherwise you would know where the starter is located on a B230 engine.
I've had great luck with rebuilt starters from american suppliers. Either of the starters listed (big one or small one) will work. just make sure the wiring is correct.

I believe it is on the drivers side, lower backside of the engine. Best way to get to it is jack the driver's side. When I first bought my '89 740T I had to change the starter before I could even drive it off(got a raw deal). Took me about a half-hour and I'm just a shadetree mechanic. Just remember to keep track of where the wires are connected. From your description sounds like your solenoid might be going bad. You might be able to get it rebuilt. Good luck!!

If you were running a lot of gas into the cylinders you probably washed away any lubrication on the walls. I would remove the plugs and squirt a couple of tablespoons of oil into each cylinder and then crank it over without the plugs in place.

If you need to replace the starter you will find it on the outside of the engine block down low on the driver's side. There are a number of starters on the road that are easier to remove than the Volvo. A long extension and working from underneath the car helps a lot.
