Ten Years After 200

Will anybody else but me throw down a commemorative shot of Swedish aquavit ("snaps") on May 7th?

Erling.

    You're a month late... 200

AFAIK, the last 240 was built on March 31, 1993. Not May 7.

    But I've been wrong before...

Hmm... several web sites point out May 7th as the last production date, I have never had any reasons for questioning that. But it turns out, here as in most matters in life, that nothing beats going to the original source. I quote this from Volvo's own web site (the English version of their Swedish site):

"1993 was the last year of the Volvo 240. In the years immediately before, the model had been produced by a separate company headed by Anna Nilsson-Ehle, under the slogan “The last 240 will be the best”. After 19 years and 2.8 million examples, the model finally came to the end of the road on 5 May 1993, following which the 500 employees ‘took a break’ until production of the Volvo 850 commenced the following summer."

Meaning I can open the bottle two days earlier!

May 5th 1993 is the date quoted in a newspaper article my friend kept in his collection. The last month of production was supposedly only "Classic" models, in dark red and blue/green.

Seems like it's established that the date is the fifth, then.

BTW: The last 200 cars that were built for sale were numbered from 200 to 1, each car getting a plaque showing the number. But number 1 was really the third car of the last three. The other two, a sedan and a wagon, were destined for the Volvo museum. (Source: www.volvo200.org)

Ten Years After: Alvin Lee's guitar 200

The guitar solos stand out in my distant and disordered memory. Hot stuff, but where is he now? Chet Atkins, BB King and even Eric Clapton have had much better staying power. Besides, Ten Years After is nearly thirty years out of date. Look to the likes of Tinsley Ellis and Leo Kotke to last into the middle of this new century.

Been a fan of Leo Kottke for 30 years, still have my well worn copy of "Six and Twelve String Guitars". I love his description of his singing voice, "Geese farts on a muggy day" LOL! He's playin' here in town next week, Cinco de Mayo...Viva!

For my money, Stevie Ray still rocks the planet.

"When shrimp learn to whistle" ... we're getting old!

I try and get my 9 & 10 year old sons to listen to the "good old days" music. They just laugh. :)

        Wait a few 200

My 17 year old listens to Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and some young folks that scare me just as much.

Hmm... perhaps I'll put one of my old TYA albums on the record player as I open the bottle on the 7th. Either that, or Swedish accordion music.

Ten Years After - end of production 200

      Oh, sorry...
On May 7th 1993, the very last of the 2,874,206 Volvo 200-series cars ever produced rolled off the assembly line at the Torslanda plant in Gothenburg. Call me sentimental, but I will straighten up on this day, put on my finest black suit and open up a bottle of Swedish snaps. This fine car deserves to be saluted on the tenth anniversary of its demise.

      Erling.
