I think my 744T got jealous of the work i was doing on the 944t. To make a long story short i she drove fine this weekend to chicago and back (~500 miles driving). But when I went to start her the next day she didnt start on the first try. She started after a few tries. So i'm like fine bad relays right? Well this morning she wouldnt start at all. So i decide to swap the relays with the ones out of my 93 944T. I swapped one in the engine compartment by the shock tower and all the ones in the console......still no start. i went and disconnected the turbo hose to the intake and sprayed starter fluid into her and she starts for a second

So i'm thinking fuel's the problem since the fluid worked....but all the relays i swapped are good (are there more than 1 in the engine compartment, or is there something else in there that i should check?)

When i turn the key i hear the fuel pump kick on and it stays on while turning the engine. But the wierd thing is its a little bit higher pitched than what i remember it sounding like (definitely higher pitched than my 944T).

I removed the bango bolt on the outlet of the fuel filter and gas came out so i assume the filter is fine/not clogged.....how do i definitively tell whats the problem. I wish there was a schrader valve to check pressure on the engine, but i'm not that lucky.

Sorry for the long response, but i'm in trouble. (and my 944T with a new manifold gasket decided she wants a new brake caliper/rotor that wont be here till friday.

Reassembled the same fuel filter with new crush washers so it wont leak. Started her up (took a bit since the gas ran out of the filter/lines). And drove it to Kroger (1 mile) Drives fine at idle....but she bogs down like a rev limiter at 4,000 rpm. So i try it again (floor it to 4K) same thing....then i decide to slow down and see about doing it off the line....but she stalled when i slowed down. The engine compartment smelled like gas (dont know if it was in my head by i smelled it)



Now the battery is nice and dead (tried jumping it, but the batter is toast (going to walmart in a few to try another.


Any thoughts?

Sounds very similar to a problem I had in the fall. Turned out to be the in-line fuel pump. I had replaced everything else (and eventually the dead battery) before doing the pump. During one of it's 'fits', I tapped it with a hammer and it made a difference. So, out it came.

That sounds like an induction leak. Remove all of the induction hoses, clean and inspect them inside and out. You will probably find a hole on the bottom of the intercooler discharge hose, or on the outside of the elbow at the throttle body.

Well last night (midnight) i put a new battery one and no luck...cranks for a sec and then locks like the battery is dead. I still smell gas so i decided to pull the fuel pressure regular vaccum hose off...small drop of gas drips out.....have the fiance turn it to the on position and a ton of gas shoots out......so that would explain the no crank situation...gas doesn't compress well.

Now that thats fixed (and new plugs) the intake manifold gasket took a dump on the number 1 cylinder so i'll replace that later today i hope

The RPM sensor on your vintage of Volvo has a history of failure.

Are the injectors clicking? If so the spark plugs should be wet with fuel. If the injectors aren't clicking check the power to them.

If you aren't getting spark, you probably have a bad RPM sensor as mentioned above, although the Power Stage occasionally gives trouble.

I would pull the relays and re-solder them or get new ones for the fuel pump and the ignition suppression relay.
Then you KNOW that they are not the problem. You've got to rule a few things out. Relays can get intermittent when they're on the way out.
Also, I'd suspect the in-tank pump from what you've told us. Sounds like it may not be running. Is the fuel level low by any chance? That will cause a loss of fuel pressure when the in-tank pump is dead. I'm about to replace one in my wife's 740GLE since it's having "issues" when the tank is low....

Which side did you check on the fuel filter? its possible its clogged, but more likley your fuel pump is dieing, it might be spinning but not fast enought o pressureize the fuel system, you could have also ran your gas tank low and rust or the like went through the system and is clogged past the filter ( chances of a clogg beyond the filter are very slim ). To check for fuel in the rail i always remove the FPR itself and see if fuel spews out it shoulhd, there shouldnt be to much return from the FPR.

Well i switched relays again...found a second relay on the 740 attached to the coolant resivior. switched it out and she started back up...took a few cranks because the feul came out of the lines when i disconnected it. BUT...here's the kicker.....i have good feul pressure....but that might only be because she's leaking like a sieve where i disconnected the line from the filter (need new washers).......

So does this mean my FPR might be bad? All of the relays seem to work but what do i really know.

Ive personally never heard of a bad FPR just stopping gas all together from getting to the engine, they will make it run like crap and things along those lines but just cutting fuel all togehter i doubt it, either was there inexpensive to replace and if yours is old you might as well just replace it. Id also replace your fuel filter since you have to get new washers that a high possibility of your problem right there, if its clogged it would also suggest why your spraying gas everywhere.

Its spraying gas everywhere because like an idiot i left 1 of the crush washers out....so i know the filter at least works a bit....i'm off to get me some washers....if i stop the spray and it doesnt start i know its the FPR (or at least according to the FAQ)...if it still runs i'll be stumped as hell.

I took the hose comming of the FPR and had my fiancee crank the engine....no fuel came out of the return.....i assume that means no fuel pressure as well?

The main fuel pump does vibrate when the car is turned to the on position as well.
