Adding recirculation switch to climate control 700 1986

Has anyone done this? I have a 1986 740GLE wagon. It does not have a button to select recirculation. It does recirculate the air when the climate control selector is moved to the max AC position. But when I am following that big bus with smoke billowing, I want to lunge for a button like the one in my 960. I assume that one could put a valve on the recirc door line, but don't want to cause trouble with the rest of the system - which has functioned fine for 18years.

Recirculate only works on defrost. Hook up an A/C 'OFF' switch or button. Don't forget, the 960 has a much more sophisticated A/C system.

My owner's manual says that it recirculates the air when in the defrost and Max A/C position (big snowflake). Since my A/C is not great, I will probably drive around most of the time in the big snowflake position anyway - bring on the fumes!

Your idea of an AC off switch might be easier. I guess that I am worried about moving the selector lever a lot, thinking that the more I do the higher risk of it breaking. Thanks for your reply.

The recirculation flap and vacuum motor is behind the glove box. Take it out and check its operation. There are two small black covers on each side of the glove box which must be removed to take the screws out.
