1976 240 Timing Belt 200 1976

Hi All,

I have a 76 245DL that I am replacing the timing belt on. I am running into an issue right at the beginning. The fan is attached to the waterpump shaft via bolts that seem to be inaccessible. I checked my 82 245 and it is totally different. These are recessed, almost non visable. Does anyone have any idea or has any one seen this before. There is a bolt in front of the fan and I think that this may be the way to go. Also, the fan seems to spin independantly of the shaft..?!

Thanks in advance,

All of you have helped my 82 get to 305,000 miles more than you know.

Mike

You have to hold the water pump pulley from rotating and then remove
the center bolt on the fan. Then you can remove the fan and clutch together.
This will give you clearance to remove the water pump pulley bolts and
get to the main stuff. You can use a strap wrench, put the car in gear
or in extreme cases you can use a very large pipe wrench on the water pump
pulley to hold it from turning. I am describing the early metal fan design.
