Woohoo! Finally fixed 'runs awful when cold' problem! 240Ti 200 1982

'82 intercooled turbo.... I've been living with this problem for months now. Car would start right up then would bog something awful if I tried to take right off. If I let it warm up about 30 seconds, it would drive OK but would feel like it's starving for fuel at the top of the RPM range. If I drove it about 15 miles, the problem would completely dissapear. Thing was, I was going back and forth to work and it was only 10 miles each direction so the car ran crappy about 90% of the time I was driving it.

I was thinking it might be the little black and gray vacuum delay valve for cold acceleration enrichment down under the intake. I finally went contortionist on it today and yanked it out. It had no delay action whatsoever, in fact, it would just hold the vacuum and never let the pressure equalize. Luckilly, had a spare that worked lying around. Installed it and problem is completely gone. I've got full power all the way to 5.5K, even before it's fully warmed up. Eight months of grief for a $5.00 plastic vacuum valve. I'm glad is wasn't the control pressure regulator!

Hope this might help someone out there in CIS turbo land!

OK, found it in the Volvo "green" book. Apparently with engine temp < 118 degrees F the thermostat valve is open (I think) and there is vacuum to this line and the delay causes control pressure to drop (which richens mixture) for about 1 second when accelerating. I suppose this might be almost like an accelerator pump squirt on a carbed engine except only when cold.

Cool...

Justin

OK, Bob. Thanks for linking a symptom to a fix (wish more people would do that, but that would be a rant for some future time) but now you gotta 'splain (a little Waltripism there...)to me what this thing is supposed to do as I probably have one as too...

I don't know if I can, exactly. I sort of understand it but can't really regurgitate it. The valve has something to do with making the control pressure regulator give the injectors more fuel, hence a richer mixture. Everything I know, I learned from the Bentley manual so you can learn everything I know about it by reading the section on CIS injection.

I've got a Bosch Fuel Injection book somewhere I guess I'll have to dig it out as you've got me curious now...

Damn, I wish MINE were that simple. Neither of them have that little valve... and I think the 85 is that way by design.

Five dollar part???!! I wish...the dealer wants to charge me $40.30 for the darn thing...and $85.78 for the vacuum valve that screws into the block. I haven't been able to find an online source for either part.

Well, I was extrapolating. I got the whole control pressure regulator for $15.00 used. Haven't needed it but it came with the a good delay valve attached (thank goodness). I'm sure you could source one at a pick n pull for $5.00 or less. You can check them with mouth suction pretty easilly. I'm sure I walked right past two of them at the pick n pull a few weeks ago. Keep your eyes peeled for people parting out turbos, either in here or on Ebay. Also there's got to be another car somewhere that uses one of these things.

That's a pretty scary price for the block vacuum valve. I wonder if Nick at FCPGroton can get them?

That vacuum check valve is a 'Ford' carb to distributor check valve. It is
a Ford part put on years before they bought Volvo. Look closely at it and
you'll see the little blue oval symbol on it. What a ripoff from the dealer.

I put the check valve on backwards one time. When I made boost pressure under cold running it literally blew part of the top off on my control pressure regulator.

Congrats on fixing your car Bob!

Destroyed my control pressure regulator. 200 1982

When I had the check valve in backwards and the engine was cold the
thermal vacuum valve is open. If you make boost with a cold engine the
check valve usually protects the warmup regulator. A backwards valve meant
the boost pressurized my warmup regulator and blew a hole in the top of
it. It was a spot where it was sealed with a metal plug. Blew it right out
and then the sucker was leaking gas out the vent hose on top. Car still got
me home!

Damn, I'm glad I guessed right on a couple of things when I replaced all my vacuum lines!

good on yah!

I replaced my semi related temp/vacuum switch when I had the intake manifold off - the funny thing I remember the guy that I bought it (new) from says...those and the delays never go south, unless you smash them...yeah right!
