Serious driveability problems... 140-160 1974

My wife uses our 164 as a daily driver and is having difficulties with it. 1)If you step on the gas pedal all the way there is major hesitation ...lift off and press down slowly and car moves like it should. There was a major hot start problem that was somewhat corrected by the clamping of all potential vacuum hose leaks.I have made up a pressure tester that I will try out tommorrow to see if the fuel pressure is up there. I'll also pull the fuel rail as I suspect more than one leaky injector. 2)There is a major problem with the auto shift lever linkage that is getting progressively worse...its at the point now that if the lever is all the way in Park it still tends to Reverse. I'll have to check out the linkage. I have the factory manual but any feedback or advice from any 164 owners would be very beneficial and most appreciated. Karl

The tranny link is easy to fix. 140-160 1974

It' usually quite lubricated and easy to loosen, but absolutely filthy. Just bite the bullet and jack it up and crawl under. Pull the slot clip off the tranny end lever and unscrew it a few turns. 3 should do. Put the slot clip back on.

The first thing I would check is the throttle position switch. Here's an article that should help you do that.

Before making any adjustments to the linkage, make sure the trans mount and engine mounts haven't separated or sagged a lot. The mounts are cheap- but you will get filthy replacing them. That can easily pull the linkage out of alignment.
