    what's the little spike? 200 1990

It's just there to locate the wheel on the hub. I can't imagine any purpose it serves. One of my sets of Virgos didn't have enough clearance for this piece on the backside, so I removed them and installed a regular M6 bolt on my 86 and 87.

It does also keep the brake rotor tight to the hub when the wheel is removed, so functionally that's the only purpose it serves.

The spike serves to index the wheel to the same mounting position each time the wheel is replaced. The spike fits into a matching hole in the wheel so the wheel has to go on in only one position. The spike and a second small bolt also fasten the rotor to the hub. Because my snow tires do not have the indexing hole in the wheel, I remove the "spike" and replace it with a small bolt when I need to use the snow tires. This doesn't seem to affect anything at all. I wondered if the spike was used when tires and wheels were balanced on the car.
