Interference engine and the broken timing belt (Has anybody had this happen to them...) 200 1982

First let me say, RIP to the BRV. She has passed on officially. I no longer drive the volvo. She is sitting here forlorn.

My new ride has an interference engine, and it is not a volvo. But you guys are so helpful and I cant find another site like this for my new car. Sunday, I heard a hesitant tapping sound. I had done some work under the hood and thought I had forgotten to remove one of the old bolts I had replaced and it had fallen down into the fan shrout. I drove it to dinner, and took the long slow way home. I looked with a flashlight. Got down on my knees and saw nothing. Monday, I drove the 1.5 to work and asked the mechanic next door to take a look. He said, "nothing is in there. Your engine is knocking." Thank god for the service warranty.

The timing belt broke. Then I learned about interference. I have to replace the timing belt, the tensioner, the camshaft pulley and the water pump(the timing belt banged up the pump housing).

Whew, thought I got off easy. Now the head has to be pulled. And I am scared of the verdict.

Right bummer. So let me ask you this: why exactly did you go for another car? Nicer interior, well that might turn out rather expensive.

I was thinking 960 at some point until I visited the 960 page with ongoing problems fo oil leaks. Image a timing belt brake on that one.

RedBlock is simple but effective, cheap to keep, fix and nowadays cheap to change out.

    Good luck!

Yeah well the news is getting worse. Perhaps I bought a lemon. The mechanic said valve and piston number 3. What does that mean to me? Any round the park estimates are appreciated.

It might mean that the valve impacted the piston so hard that it cracked the
piston. In the most extreme cases the engine can damage the pistons as well
as the valves. Sorry to hear that happened.

That means that like the newer Volvo motors.. if you loose a timing belt.. you might have to write off the bottom end.

Do a brickboard search for Tom Iriwin or Toyota Tom.

I had a T-belt jam/skip on my Fiat Spyder, when the smog pump froze. Interference motor. Snapped a valve. Had to have the head pulled, valve job done. Cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

I've since left California, and removed that smog pump (and all the other ridiculous stuff they made me put on the car.)

Geez- Do I have this to look forward to in my 960? It is a B6304.

When was the last time the timing belt was changed. If you dont know or it has been awhile and you have an interference engine, save yourself heartburn and a stroke and replace the timing belt ASAP.

i had a interfeance engine in a honda and the belt broke at 55mph the engine stoped running sloowly luckly it did not hurt pistons or the valvs on this type engine the valvs are so close to pistons that they hit as the belt breaks the cam stops moveing and a few valvs are left hanging as the pistons are still fireing from residual fuel the pistons come up and slam into the valvs that are hanging low in my case the valvs that got hit by pistons simply moved with the stroke of the piston apone getting hit good luck as the worst that can happen is a broken crank, piston, valvs, head, rods alot can happen hope its not to bad ps make sure to cheack head for a hair line crack under the cam in-between the valvs
