Hi,

I've got a 84GL and would like to install central locking. However i called my local volvo wreck and he said to install aftermarket parts(ie universal kits)
Is it possible to do so and how do i go about doing it??

also got a slight creaking sound at the right rear.sounds like a creaking spring sound. is it the bushing or the shocks.not sure what is it.thanks

Surprised to hear this. Thought it was standard from (at least) 83 even on DL trim. Just wondering it you do have it but it isn't working. This would be hard to tell without opening a door panel and knowing what to find (as others have said there's no motor in the driver's door). Or knowing, perhaps, how much easier it is to pull and push a non-motorized lock knob than a motorized one.

GLs have all the goodies. BTW, saw one today, 84 GL sedan with gold Coronas and only 106K on its odometer. Do folks paint these wheels gold??

nope..from australia here and the GL didn't come with central locking coz i took the panels apart. just to digress from the topic i am getting 14litres/100km(city cycle) which is atrocious but i did get close to 10lit/100km when i went country driving during easter break. think the rated values for city is around 11lit/100km. I've the B23E engine btw. any reasons for it ? exhaust doesn't seem fuel rich when i smell it.

Must be a matter of vintage, matey. My Oz-delivered Swedish 1988 240 came with central locking.

That 14 l/100 is not that unusual. I am getting the same in Brisbane traffic: uphill-downhill all the time, with short trips, A/C on much of the time. The wifemobile Sube Liberty does barely better, but then she is a leadfoot too.

Also, since you are in Oz: the cheap locking kit I used was from Strathfield Car Sound (Brisbane Car Sound up here), costing something like A$40. Comes complete with 2 switching locks, 2 slaves, complete wiring, a remote-enabled relay and reasonable instructions. If you happen to be in Bris, you could drop in to have a look. Thanks for the offer anyway..here in Melbourne and not exactly near..Anyway just completed respraying the interiors of my vinyl covering to black..looks much better now. after finishing 2 big cans of vinyl spray..

Volvo has a kit for this, got the box on my desk as I write. Part # 3529035, to fit 1980 models and up. Parts are marked "VDO, Made in Germany". Relays are Hella though. The kit contains everything you need; three motors, cable harnesses, lock rods, relays and fittings, even tie bands. The installation manual describes how to rebuild the trunk lid and wagon hatch, but the necessarry parts are not included in my kit.

The disadvantage of the OEM kit is that only the driver's door will operate the locks. This is not good if, e.g., one wants to hold onto small children safely on the kerb while unlocking the car. Neither has the OEM kit a connection for potential remote operation.

I am in the process of converting the OEM in my 1988 240 to dual-operation (lock AND switch) aftermarket on the front doors. The different lock motors require making new connecting rods, but otherwise fit the existing holes on the door metal. The easier bit is done (the passenger side front), but I am still waiting for a less crowded weekend to do the driver's side and the rewiring plus new relay installation. When done, I will consider having a remote module plugged in - wife is very keen on them remotes.

Note that aftermarket bits are less robust than OEM, but cheap as chips. I bought the kit because our kids were holding onto the door opener while I was operating the remote on our aftermarket-equipped Subaru and the motor smoked. Having replaced that one motor, I am now playing with the rest of the full kit that cost the price of 1.5 single motor from an auto electrician.

It would be cheaper and easier to go to the junkyard and get the trigger switch and an actuator from the doors of a wreck. Put the actuator in the drivers door, and the switch in the passenger door. Splice in a few wires. Door locks can be operated from both sides.

Right, but what if you want central locking on all four doors?

thx all fellows for the advice given will try to look for a better aftermarket kit and mess around with it. pity easter break's over for me so will have to wait a while before embarking on this project.

I installed aftermarket central locking on my 1979 244. It's not very easy but it can be done. Still if you're not very skilled I reccomend you go to an alarm dealer. They should know how to install it. The creaking sound in the back is probably a worn out bushing, shocks don't make noise usually.

mm..pretty novice at this ..still learning more abt the brick after three months with it..how do you tap the power from then and do i have to drill a lot of holes in the panel?? been looking inside the panel after respraying my vinyl panels and wondering whats the best approach..

DIY is not a big issue here but need to know more about it coz the Haynes manual makes no much sense to me with only a section on central locking. Thanks

Usually aftermarket kits are coming with one master actuator, and three slaves. There are better ones that come with two master and two slaves so that you can unlock the car from either side. Wiring is usually described in the box at least for the better ones. I don't like the OEM kit even though the parts are VDO (Siemens actually) because of the damned switch you get for the driver door. If you want to install an alarm or a remote locking you will still have to add a driver door actuator and the OEM relay doesn't fit it so you'll have to add another relay for it ... I know about it cause I did it in my 245. It sucks. I had to wire the new relay to the alarm to control opening of the driver door and leave the bloody switch in place in order to open the other three doors and the trunk, so now I have on the driver door the actuator and the switch... I cannot take the panels down on the 244 to get you some photos because I gave it to my parents. Their car broke. But I'll try to take a couple of shots on my 245 so you'll see how to fit the aftermarket actuator. Send me a mail at vlmoldov@zappmobile.ro so that I can forward you some pics.
