Stereo/power problems with 1989 244 DL 200

Hey everyone,

Just last week I installed an amp and subwoofer in my 1989 Volvo 244 DL. Its a 680W Jensen Amp hooked up to a 12' Pioneer sub and two 6x6 Pinwood speakers. The amp is 4-channel so I have an individual channel to each 6x6 and two channels bridged for the subwoofer.

Now heres the problem. For the past week the system has been working wonderful. All the sudden today the stereo and the whole system is cutting out intermittantly. When it happens the whole stereo turns off almost as if the car were being turned off. WHen this happens the sound goes out also. But the thing is it comes back on and then goes back off and keeps doing it. I'm pretty sure it's power related somehow. On my stereo I turned off the Bass and Treble boost and that seemed to make it stop for the most part. BUt sometimes when i do things like use the turning signal etc. the stereo will cut out again for that time being.

I checked the wires and the fuses and they are intact. I watche dthe amp while it would cut out and the amp stays on even when the stereo and sound cut out. So it appears to be a problem with the stereo not drawing enough power. I was thinking to fix this problem I would need a new battery, maybe even have to get a more powerful one? What do you guys (and gals probably) think?

Thanks in advance,
Trevor

    Trevor,

In addition to the other connectors suggested, check also the regular power feed to the head unit. On my 88, similar problems occurred because the metal end caps on the fuse had oxidized. So: remove the fuse(s) - include any in-line fuses or other connectors in the power feed as well - and carefully clean the *entire* contact surface. Even twirling the fuse in the holder won't necessary completely clean the connections; you should remove them for a complete job.

When you say fuses do you mean the fuses down below and to the left of the steering column?

Yes, first clean the fuses (or at least the fuse which provides power to any part of the radio/stereo system) down on the car's fuse panel, left wall of the driver's side footwell. A good cleaning requires more than just twirling the fuse in its holder.

But also make sure you check any other inline fuses or connections which may be in this circuit. Often there are also in-line fuses, perhaps behind the head unit. Also remove, clean, and reinstall any electrical ground connections you come across; there are a dozen or so scattered througout the vehicle, including one under the parking brake cover and another on the left side of the transmission tunnel, above the driver's right ankle.

It's not surprising that frequently these connections get oxidized and intermittent - after all, these cars are not new. I find these are common problems with older vehicles.

I had the same problem with my wife's '87 240 about six months after I installed an in-dash cd player. It would shut off while driving or when applying the brakes intermittently and then immediately come back on. Even though the battery terminal were clean, it turned out to be the cables. I installed new volvo cables and the problem immediately went away.

Before changing the battery or upgrading to a bigger one you should do some other things first:
    1. Check your battery terminals for oxidation. If they are oxidated, clean them with a little sand paper (by the way, clean them anyway you never know) and grease them with some electrically conductive grease (there's a spray with white lithium grease from STP that works OK with battery terminals)
    2. Check your alternator to see if it works OK or have it done in a garage. The battery by itself cannot handle the power loads if the alternator fails to charge correctly.
    3. Try using a power capacitor (1 Farad should be enough) for power drains that are supposedly coming from the amp.

Have you considered instlling a Volvo voltmeter in your dash? They are available on eBay at reasonable cost, fit in the space below the small clock, and are easy to install.

You may be drawing current at the upper margin of the battery/alternator system capacity.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
