Volvo 740 Will not pass 190 km

I have a 740 GLE 1989 16 valve.
The tranmission has been chaged from the 3 speed with od to a tranmission out of my other volvo a 1986 740 GLE 8 valve. The tranmission is a 4 speed now and the car still will only go 190 km if a push it hard. I fiqure the car has a fuel limter or speed limter and I was hoping someone could help me get rid of what ever is stoping the car from going faster. The engine is tuned and is running great but the problem is when I hit 190 the car will not go any faster and either stays at redline (6000 RPMS) or if I let off the gas off the floor it will shift up and not go any faster. The car did the same thing with the 3 speed tranmission in it but now its got any extra gear not od. I figure it should at least go faster if not alot faster now but I guess theirs something stoping it from using the next gear.

If someone could help me out and tell me what to modify or get to allow the car to use somemore of the power it has that would be great.

Thanks to who every can help me.

Well I live up north in Canada and speed is my thing!!!
The car is in great shape and has no problem get up to 190 but its like it hits a brick wall and doesn't want to go faster and I know it can.
Cause with the tranmission out of my other volvo and in this one I don't even need to use the last gear the car with go that fast in thrid. So I guess I have to find something else to try.

Maybe a new fuel chip or an upgraded one.

If you're strictly looking for a top speed gain, you could change your rear end for one with a lower axle ratio. Your 16-valve car probably has a 4.10 rear end... anything lower than that (3.73, 3.54, 3.31) would increase top speed, but hurt acceleration off the line.

There's a chart in the FAQ that lists ratios for various 700 & 900 cars.

I believe there's an ecu-based rev limiter at 6000 rpm... maybe someone else will have some specifics for you on that.

Where are you driving that you need to go much faster than 190 kmph (~118 mph, right?), anyway?

190 km/h? I think that's about as fast as it's going to go, with either transmission. At about that point air resistance becomes a nearly insurmountable barrier. It is a brick, after all.

Out of curiosity, why would you need to go that fast? Are you racing the thing on an oval? If that's your bag, you'll definately want a turbo.
