Do I need to remove cap to replace distributor? 700 1986

I have a 1986 740 n/a with a camshaft/firewall mounted distributor. I bought the whole distributor to replace.
Is it possible to figure out which orientation the shaft on the distributor is supposed to be at? It looks like by guessing I have a 50/50 chance because either I'm right or 180 degrees wrong. With a continuity tester can I figure out where the shaft needs to be oriented?

I've never replaced the distributor.

Thanks,
Nathan

Some people use a large pry bar to flex the firewall enough to remove and replace the distributor as an assembly. I prefer to remove the cap and rotor. Be sure to unplug the Hall effect while the distributor cap is still in place. I know that you have a new distributor, but the cap helps keep the Hall effect connector in the distributor when unplugging the chassis side connector.

I have to remove the cap on min to get the distributor out. The shaft will only go in one way. It has two offset drive dogs that engage offset slots on the cam. HTH
