Could my alternator still run my 1990 760 V-6 if one of the 2 drive belts snapped?? Please help!! 700

Hey Guys!

I have question. One of my alternator belts on my alternator is frayed, and may go at anytime. 99% of my driving is hwy.Should this happen would the car still run ok on the other belt? My alternator has a dual groove pulley with 2 belts around it (how many amps?). I have new ones but i will not be able to install until another day or so. The weather has not been the greatest!! I mean would i lose power, stall out, ruin the bearings? What is the purpose for a dual pulley on this model? The car has 170,000 miles on it and is well cared for, please all suggestions/experiences are welcomed! THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!

It would work fine with only one belt... Although if you are worried about it breaking, i would remove it rather than let it snap... if it snaps off it may get in the path of the other belt(s) and cause them to snap or come off... One belt on my 740 16v is driving the Power Steering and A/C compressor and it does just fine (for some reason i can't manage to keep 2 belts on the darn thing!)

Yes, one belt will carry the load. I'm sure Volvo used two belts for a reason, but the 700 series B230 powered cars use only one alternator belt and they have the same electrical load.
