has anyone installed cruise control on a non-cruise car? 700 1988

Hey, I;ve got an 88 740 GLE (manual) that I would like to install cruise control on... The car DID NOT originally come with cruise.

Has anyone else out there done this?

I have all of the factory manuals,

What kind of stuff should I be looking out for?

Thanks a bunch.

The complete instructions are in the 700/900 FAQ. I wrote them. To go straight to them, click here.

All US 700 series car were pre-wired for cruise to make them dealer fitted options. This makes your life easier. Here is what you need:

    Vacuum pump with bracket
    Vacuum servo
    Bracket for such
Throttle pulley with extra wheel for cruise control
    Pedal swtich (two if manual)
    ECU
    Stalk
Vacuum piping and T and L fittings

Plug in the ECU above the driver feet, should be 8 pin multiplug plus one single. Replace present indicator stalk with one for cruise. Fit pump, vacuum servo, throttle pulley and pedal switch(es). Then run vacuum hose from pump to T and from T to servo and pedal switch or if you have a clutch to T inside car and then to pedal swtiches.

Dead easy. Make sure the vacuum pipes and servo all hold vacuum.

It should be. I installed cruise on my diesel recently and had a problem with a worn throttle pulley so I ordered a new one. Look for proper operation of that and of the vacuum pump and servo. Easiet to do that is take three wires and a bit of vacuum pipe with you to braker. Make sure all is connected properly in the car, then take vacuum pipe from pump to servo, making sure you exclude the pedal switches at this stage and connect the terminal closest to the pump head to plus and the other two to minus. If all is well, the pump should now create vacuum and suck the servo which should operate the throttle. Do this just long enough to make sure it can go the whole way and keep it there. Be aware also that there are two systems, one 9 pin ECU and one 12 pin. Check inside your car which one you have and get the right brain.

if your installing a volvo kit, it comes with instruction booklets. very easy, if your taking it off another car your going to have to make sure you dont forget anything, your car is prewired for the vacuum pump .
