Is my alternator toast or is it just brushes? 200 1982

My brick has the 4cyl gas with the 70 ah Alternator. Car has 153K+ miles. Brushes on internal regulator measure 6mm & 7mm respectively. This is close to the low spec. If I change the brush assembly & internal regulator should this solve the problem or is the alternator just too old & worn after 153K+ miles ? regardless of the brushes is it at or near the end of its life?

Old Volvo solder often won't melt, so you may need to clip the old ones first.

Get generic brushes, they can be trimmed with a pair of kleins or end-nippers. They'll look a little ragged on the end, but will wear down to match the armature after a while.

I agree with the others, go with the brushes. I have 200000+ on my original alternator. I did the Brushes at around 150K just for giggles.
Bearings are still quiet

You don't mention the problem- is the alternator not charging? Brushes are cheap. If you know how to solder you can replace them yourself and not have to buy the assembly. Volvo part number is 1362710 and should be around $3 or $4, if you can locate a generic set they will be even cheaper.

I can't see it from here, but my best guess is that if you rebrush it you'll be back in business.
