Screws for Plates 200 1990

I bought every kind of licence plate screw that I could find...at Wal-Mart. Nothing is working for front or back. What am I doing wrong? Do I have to buy special screws for this or what? Junkyard cars rarely have the plates still on.

Thanks,

Julie

Julie: They're the 10 mm acorn (or cap) nuts. Same as hold down the valve cover. If you hit the junkyard again, open the hood of a few of the wrecks and scavenge the nuts off the engine.

Pretty darn close to valve cover nuts.

Technically, the correct thread is M6x1.0. The valve cover nuts don't have the built-in flange of the license plate nuts, but they'll do nicely. I use them all the time.

But if you stop by the dealer, the absolutely correct nuts ought to be less than a buck each. Same nut for every Volvo from the 240 to today's models, so I'm sure they have a ton of 'em.

If your plate brackets are original, you have four threaded studs to put the plate on. The 92 940 my mother in law just bought had the wrong nuts holding the plates on. As this was the most glaring and immediate problem with the purchase (!) I asked my sister in law to pick up eight M6 nuts at the Home Depot in the specialty fastener drawers. Asked her to find stainless steel. The M6 is the metric size they should be-- attach with a 10mm wrench.

Ideally they should be "acorn nuts" if you can find them.
