I am starting to understand this turbo thing.... a little more everyday. 700 1992

This weekend i am going to replace the exhaust from the downpipe all the way back. The stock cat converter is old and rusty. Looks like the original cat plus there is a big hole in the rear muffler. So all that will be replaced.Magnaflo hi flow cat and Magnaflo muffler 2.5in. all the way back.

How does these items work in relation to Turbo Volvos?

1 Dawes device. What is this and it's function? Should i consider one for my turbo wagon?
2 Boost controller. The same as a Dawes device or something different? Please explain.
3 Calibrated boost gauge. This a device that gives you an actual number/bar to see where the turbo pressure is? If not, please explain.
4 a/f ratio. Please explain this one too.
5 Gvalve?
I just want to reach somewhere around 200-230 Hp on my wagon. That seems good enough for me at this time.

Next is setting up the suspension or should i do this first then the turbo stuff next?
Thanks for all the advice, criticisms, responses.

I have installed the Dawes Devices boost controller on my 1990 745 and am very happy with it's operation. I have an AutoMeter air/fuel ratio meter and calibrated boost gauge. The instructions that come with the boost controller are pretty much idiot proof. Good luck.

My '95 850 turbo wagon is rated at 220hp. Out in the real world there isn't much I can't leave in the mirrors in the daily stoplight / commuting Grand Prix. If I had that much steam in my 740 turbo wagon with manual trans, I'd be a really happy guy!

Since the other response answers your boost questions I won't repeat. Personally, I prefer to do suspension/brakes before power. As I haven't had my 740 long I'm doing a little of each but mostly just getting it to a good starting point. All I've done is add IPD swaybars and they made a huge difference in cornering attitude.

I'd think your exhaust upgrade and a boost controller should get you very noticeable results.

An A/F gauge, measures your air fuel ratio. This is done by tapping into your existing O2 sensor.

The gauge will read in either LED's, or Volts. You can attach a volt meter to the sensor wire if you want. Below .5 Volts its running lean, above .5 its rich (good on a turbo car) and .5 is stoic.

Get a G-Valve, dawes devise (all the same).
A performance cam will also help immensly.

Read through the posts at www.turbobricks.org 's forum for some more idea's. 230HP is quite easy to get

The G valve is the same as the Dawes and it is a boost control valve. There might be other types of control valves but the Dawes/G is hard to beat. It keeps the wastegate from feeling the true pressure. The wastegate opens at a certain psi and the valve simply prevents the wastegate from openning until a higher pressure is reached. This means more boost. You need the calibrated boost gauge first to establish where your boost is now and where it is after the controller goes in. You want to be around 10-13 psi, probably, not over 14 psi and you should also be able to recognize detonation (pinging) if it occurs.

It is easy on a 240T. I have not taken the time to figure out where to put it in the '90 780. I am not sure what to do with the turbo plus if there is any reason to consider things like that. If any one can tell us the best way to install it in a 700, I would like to know.

Guys on T-Bricks, just splice it in as close to the wastegate as possible. Its dead simple.

There are cheaper than Dawes Device. You can make them yourself for like 15 bucks. There is a guy on T-Bricks who build and sells them for around 30-40 bucks. His name is Isaiah, I have his valve on my 79GT. Works great!
