Wont start after changing out motors 200

My b230f wont start. Put the good running b230f from my totalled 90 740 in an 89 240dl that I bought with a thrown rod. Bought an intermediate shaft with the distributor gear and installed it. (are these all the same?) Used the dist from the 240. Also used the intake manifold with complete fuel injection setup from the 240 per suggestion as it is the regina. New timing belt, capand rotor, plugs, oil filter, oil pan gasket, water pump gasket and metal timing cover gasket. Used the 240 temp sending unit off of the head (to fit wiring harness) Used the tranny from the 240 (AW70) but left the 740 flywheel/halls ring/torque converter on. Are the halls effect rings on both engines the same? When I looked thru the hall effect mounting hole at the ring (after dropping the motor) I noticed that the "big hole" in the ring was in a different spot from one engine to the next in reference to the crank gear at tdc. Tried reseating the dist one tooth at a time still no start. Tried the "known good" halls pickup from the 740 and the one from the 240. Unplugged the mass air unit. I have 45 lbs at the fuel rail. Good compression on the cylinders. Injectors are spraying fine. Plenty of spark. Are the cams the same ? The engine pops like it wants to start, and backfires when its 180 out. Sounds like timing issue. Could this be electrical or a computer problem ? This is the first time I've done major work on my Volvo and I'm stumped. Thanks for the help,
Jack in Dallas

I agree, it sounds like a timing issue. When at TDC check to make sure that the rotor is lined up with the "tic" in the distributor. It is subtle, but a small groove is on the top of the distributor. If off, the easy way to realign it is pull out the distributor, turn until lined up and re-install. The rotor will turn as the gears mesh, but you should be able to get it after a couple of tries.

    Hope this helps,
    Chris

    Hey Jack,

Had the same symptoms when my timing belt jumped on me. Hence cam timing could be the issue here, especially considering that you replaced the betl as part of the changeover.

    Happy Bricking!!!
