IPD Transmission Flush Hose 900 1992

Has anyone used IPD's transmission flush hose? Can it be done in 15 minutes? Is it as easy as it seems? What are the pros and cons?

Thanks

My 940's experience almost exactly duplicates "JetDriver". It took me about an hour to do it singlehanded, shutting off when the bubbles began to appear in the clear plastic hose, then adding about two quarts to the filler tube. It was 12qts of the Walmart Dexron before the fluid looked clean, so I did about six laps back and forth. I used 3/8 hose, and wiggled and pressed until it "threaded" onto the upper nipple from the rad. The fluid just dribbles out, there's no pressure to speak of. I drained and refilled the pan first to try to get at least some of the sediment out. Fluid was muddy-brown!

On the final fill, once you feel you have flushed adequately, fill only to the lowest mark on the stick, then warm the engine up and run through the gears. Fill again to the low mark if nec. and drive the car until full hot, and fill to the correct mark. As mentioned, the level is quite sensitive to trans temperature.

If you change frequently (30,000mi?) and don't have extreme (hot/cold/towing) conditions, ordinary ATF is good enough. If you want that little extra margin, go for the synthetic.

As you can see from the responses, the ATF flush is very easy. I found that with the engine running in idle, it pumps out the fluid a little faster than I could put it in, using a funnel. My fluid change was a family operation. My wife manned the out hose and counted the quarts in pre marked milk jugs. I did the fill, trying to keep up. I had to stop the engine a few times to catch up. I did a gear shift through too while flushing and ended up using 10 quarts.

I bought a length of 3/8" clear hose from Home Depot. The 3/8" was a little too small so I heated the end over the stove while wedging a center punch inside to enlarge it a little. I got a good tight fit.

Synthetic tranny fluid supposedly lends itself to the longevity of the transmission. Great for keepers. If you go the synthetic route than expect to pay close to $5/qt, for Mobil 1 AFT, that is. The most important thing, as mentioned previously, is to change the AFT on a regular basis.

Don't waste money on their hose. Just use the clear vinyl (aquarium) hose and mount to the top radiator outlet. I used four gallons of wal-mart dexron for the flush at a cost of 14 us. I did drain the pan first which was easy and added about 2.25 quarts. My wife started the car and I had her run through the gears waiting for 2 quarts of fluid to come out to fill a market gallon jug. Drain 2 quarts and add 2 quarts until you get bright red fluid. Drive around after correcting the level for about 2 - 500 miles then do the same flush with mobil one sythetic trans fluid. This time just use the 8 quarts of fluid. 40us and you've got a great flush. Mine was quite black when I did this. The trans has stopped "hunting" for a different gear at moderate speeds now. Good Luck.

I just did two of our cars last week. I use a clear aquarium hose that is a press fit over the top cooling line connection on the radiator. I run it into the pan I use for draining my oil. I usually run about two quarts out and then turn off the engine before adding two quarts and repeating the process. After the sixth quart has run out I reconnect the line and add what I need to bring it up below the full mark. I take it for a drive and once it is hot I top it off to the full mark on the hot side of the dipstick. I change mine out about every 20,000 miles so it doesn't really get dirty and I think six quarts is enough to "flush" it if you do it often enough. ATF is very inexpensive when compared to transmission work...

IPD Transmission Flush Hose what size ID? 900 1992

I have read where the folks here have used 1/2" ID with a hose clamp, and other using tubing that just press fits on.
What ID diameter hose are the folks using that press fit it on?

I am about to do this on my 95 960. I have the 1/2" ID clear hose and a hose clamp. My question is: Will the transmission be harmed if the transmission sump runs dry? I understand it holds about 2.5 quarts. Also, how long does it take to pump out 2 qts of fluid from the transmission.

I would not suggest running the engine until bubbles come out. There's no need to. When I flushed our 95 960, I started the car, watched the container fill, when it got to the 1.5 qt mark, I turned the engine off. By the time I went from the front of the car to the driver's door to turn it off, the container filled to 2 qts. It only takes 15-25 seconds to pump out the 2 qts.

One note of caution. RECHECK your fluid levels when your all done and the engine is hot and has been driven. ATF expands a lot when hot.... so even thought you are putting in the same volume of ATF, one fluid will be at room temp and the other at tranny temp. So you can easily overfill the trans.

        Been there done that.

One nice thing about using the clear hose is that you can see when bubbles start to form in the fluid being expelled. Once the bubbles appear to be taking up about 50-65% of the mixture in the hose I shut it off and and add fluid. I've never really worried too much about running the sump dry. Just keep an eye to the hose and be ready to turn the engine off if no fluid is being expelled. Just GUESSING on volume/time I would say a quart in 20-30 seconds.

I just did this last weekend with nothing more than a piece of 1/2 inch ID rubber hose and a single hose clamp. Remove the top trans cooler line at the radiator, run the hose over to your dump bucket, run the car and feed it more fluid as it comes out. Top off when you've flushed enough. What's enough? I put 6 quarts through it- my fluid was pretty dirty. Your call.

Note: on my 240, there was a perfect spot to hold the 1-qt empty bottles of ATF, along the frame rail right next to the cooler lines and exhaust manifold. The bottles stood upright, and since they had the clear line up the side, I could see when they were full. It only took 15 seconds or so to remove 1 qt.
Then I poured in the new quart, and used that bottle for the waste. Worked great and in 1/2 hour or so I was all done and cleaned up.

    Good luck!

It's a great product. Yes, it is as easy as advertised. There are no cons, only pros: your tranny will be completely flushed at very low cost and will both perform better and last much longer. You will also prevent problems such as o/d solenoid clogging and valve ball wear.

This procedure should be MANDATORY for all Volvos on a regular, but infrequent basis. I did a complete flush on each car with Mobil 1 synthetic. I drain the pan at scheduled intervals. The fluid has remained clean and bright, with no evidence of dirt or wear particles. Consider springing the dough for the synthetic if you can (although that's a big commitment at $5 per quart for ten quarts).

If you're only putting in 10 quarts, then the total fluid capacity can't be drained, and you already have conventional in there, is it okay to put in synthetic?

The total fluid capacity of the AW71 transmission is less the 8 qts, more if you have the exta transmission cooler. mixing synthetic & non is fine but you obviously get a blend of their porperties.

I count 6 litres of fluid being used in the green volvo service manual I have. But they no not shift through all the gears until they are done flushing. Maybe shifting through those gears during the flush helps get those 2 extra qts out.

By the way, I have the extra cooler and will be flushing myself soon. Any special tasks for an ATF cooler anyone is aware of?

The ipd instructions don't say to drain the pan, just hook up the hose and start flushing. Do you drain the pan, refill, and flush or just flush. Seems the no drain would mix clean and dirty in the pan and take more fluid, but how much more? A couple of quarts more to avoid getting under the car might be worth it.

Anytime you remove the pan bolt to drain ATF fluid, you risk stripping the soft metal pan and or bolt and probably both. Take it from an idiot who has done that twice, don't even go there. You get a good flush via the cooling line route. Don't press your luck monkeying with the pan bolt.

        Twice an idiot.
