'clunking noise' S90-V90

I have a rear passenger side "clunking noise". Can't seem to find where it is coming from. Any hints? Thanks

The 4 brackets that the rear suspension bolt to, are in turn bolted to the body by two or three bolts at each bracket. Tighten all those bracket bolts and see if the clunk goes away. It did on my wagon. (Sounded a little like the rear hatch was loose at the time.)

I did it right after I got the car at 60K and need to do it again at 100K I think!

With 60 k miles I had to replace cushion under AT. Go under the car and move strongly up and down your AT.

I had a clunking noise in the rear of my 95 960. I replaced both shocks and the noise diminished significantly but still occurs when going over large bumps. Which may be normal? Both shocks showed signs of oil leakage.

My S90 had a clunking sound that sounded like the drive shaft was banging around on something when I was stopped and lifted and reapplied the brakes.
The problem was solved after replacement of the lower rear control arm bushings.

When does it happen? When you hit a bump?
I think a loose shock or exhaust are the most likely. You have to get under there and poke around.

I had the same symptom in my 97 960. Turns out the uppershock mount bolt was loose a quarter turn. This was after the dealer trid many times to find it. My recommendation: have them tighten all suspension shock and strut mounts first, then go from there.

'clunking noise' S90-V90 1998

I have a hollow clunking noise in the front area of my 1998 V-90 when going over bumps or broken pavement/potholes, where the suspension . It has been there for 2 years and steadily getting worse. Sometimes it seems like the strut, and other times it seems like the steering rack. The dealer has not been able to find it, inspite of many attempts.

They had replaced the left front strut (just one strut, instead of the set, as one would expect from other auto companies) under warranty when the problem first appeared. I could have sworn the initial noise was from the right side, but the dealer said it was from the left. The noise did not go away.

The dealer says many 960/965 have this front end noise problem and that he could replace the entire front end components and the noise may still be there. They are going to try again.

Also have a bushing noise coming from the transmission area going over bumps.

IS THE FIRST NOISE DESCRIBED ABOVE SIMILAR TO WHAT YOU EXPERIENCED?
