Rough idle, stall within minutes after starting 200 1989

My son's 89 240 (200,000 miles) starts and run ok for just a couple of minutes ( = about 4 blocks) then runs like crap. Rough idle, stall and wants to die when giving gas. Acts like vacuum line was pulled off. Checked for loose or bare (cracking insulation) on wiring under hood, all vacuum lines look good. Idle switch adjustment OK. In Ohio where cold when starting.

At a loss how to begin diagnosing. Any suggestion appreciated. Could it be idle control valve sticking or temperature sensor screwing up computer mixture? I did not check the distributor cap/rotor. I'll check that tomorrow.

Read posts earlier (under "To those with intermittent stalls") about the 25 amp fuse near the battery in these cars. There is a white plastic blade-type fuseholder near the driver's strut tower near the high/low beam relay. This gets dirty and corroded and causes all sorts of intermittent problems. Replace it with a watertight unit and new fuse and at least you'll know it's not at fault if nothing changes.

I check the fuse. It's been a while since I owned a 240, corroded fuses I do remember.

      Thanks Dylant

This leads me to believe fuel dilivery issue. Listen for the fuel pump operation (through the gas cap) when you "switch" the ignition (without crank the engine). When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter ?

My son brought this car about 1 year ago, so don't know about fuel filter. I'll listen for pump.

      Thanks

Gary, any engine needs three basic things to run:

        1. compression
        2. Ignition
        3. Fuel

In your case, from what it sounds, the problem lies either in fuel or ignition. However, since the car actually runs for a few minutes it sounds more like a Fuel issue than ignition. Doesn't hurt to check ignition anyway, check for a good spark.

Also read this for general help/info: http://www.salemboysauto.com/faqs/faq-51.htm

I'll be checking it out today. I usually do preventative maintenance on my 740 and 940 (distributor, rpm sensor, fuel pump relay, radio suppression relay, injector o-rings, fuel pressure regulator, vacuum hoses, etc.), my son buying this used, I have no idea how long things have been on the car. So I think I'll replace ignition stuff anyway (plugs, wires, cap and rotor) and fuel filter. I'll also check the in tank fuel pump and replace the cermic fuses with metal ones and clean the 25 amp fuse under the hood that Dylant suggested.

I'll also see if I can figure out a way to diagnose the idle control valve. Perhaps it is also time to invest in a fuel pressure guage.

I found a post that might help you in diagnosing the problem: http://www.brickboard.com/ARCHIVES/1998JAN/7223.shtml

I got two different cars mixed up, apparently you have to listen for the fuel pump buzz with the engine running...

Thanks for the info. I read it and gives good summary. I replaced the main fuel filter and has help considerably, but still missing power it should have. I have order an in tank filter.
