245GLT rear hatch replacement 200

The automotive love of my life, my 84 245GLT, while mechanically pristine, suffers from the continuous onset and spread of rust. I have made many repairs and try to keep up with new outbreaks, but I fear I have lost the rear hatch. I'll find out this spring when the weather warms. My question is this. If I could locate a new hatch with no or little rust, what year 240's could I choose from so that I may have as many choices as possible?

Thanks - Bill

    Hi Bill,
What color is your 245? I have a White one sitting in my yard that will be stripped of parts soon for use in my 242t(steering rack, etc). The hatch was refinished(glass out) about 3 years ago and is in great shape. Let me know if this would help. BTW, its an '85 Dl.

    Wow!

Eric has the perfect answer for you.

One other change not mentioned is that the hole for the key lock changed diameter in '80, or so. It went from small to large.

Or maybe the other way 'round.

If you're fortunate enough to take advantage of Eric's kind offer, don't forget that you must move your lock barrel to the replacement t-gate.

Also, keep ALL the hardware 'n stuff from the old tailgate. If the defroster grids work, I'd even keep the old glass glass -- it's easy to remove and reinstall. Keep in mind that if you have a spare part, you'll never need it. But if you don't have one particular item, that't the one thing you'll need.

I might have the perfect solution to your problem. 84 245 parts car being used to restore an 84 244. I've no need for a wagon hatch. I'll look hard at it but I'm fairly certain it is rust free, dent and ding free. The wiper and everything else works. I'd be glad to give it to you for the cost to ship it and box it up. Where are you located? Give me a way to contact you and we'll talk about the timing.

Few changes in the cargo door design. First is to find one that's rust free and, with supreme luck, from a car with the same paint number as yours. Then post here again.

I know that the window mounting method changed, the high-level brake light appears in 1986 (you can retrofit), the latch handle changed twice, and maybe they went to aluminum at sometime. Other BBRD folks have those answers. AFAIK all will fit your hinges, latch and opening.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

No aluminum hatches in 240s. However all the 700/900/90 series wagons have aluminum hatches. Physically any year 240 hatch will fit. The hardware does change and the lock cylinder is definitely an issue if one finds an early model.
