Auxiliary Tank Question? 700

I've had my auxiliary tank out today, to replace one of the pipes, which had split. It's fairly simple: - pull up the carpet (don't forget to disconnect heater hoses first!) then unbolt the cover plate. Unbolt the 4 bolts which hold the tank in place. You then have to carefully lift the tank as much as it will (about 3 inches, then get your hand and a screwdriver in the gap, undo the 2 pipe clips, which hold the pipes to the tank. Undo the breather pipe clip from the top of the aux. tank and it should just lift out. The hardest part I found was trying to reconnect the pipes to put it back in! As you're not putting it back in, you need to change the filler pipe, from the Y shaped origonal, and put a straight one in. Also, I'd recommend finding a long pipe to match the smaller of the two, and connect it into the breather pipe, otherwise, you can simply block this off, but don't forget to also block the top breather pipe too. As for the fuel gauge, on my 1986 760 if you take the instrument panel out, on the back of the fuel gauge are 2 screw hols, of which only one has the screw in, put the screw in the other hole and it'll register right for a 60 Litre tank instead of 80L.

Hope this helps

Mike

I have not done this before, but if you remove the aux. tank and replace the filler hose with one from a 740 without the aux. tank it should work okay. Substitute a resistor(with the same value as the aux tank fuel level sender in the empty position)in for the removed fuel level sensor and the gas gauge will register correctly. Like I stated before I have never done this swap before, but it looks like it would be an easy swap. One question though, why do you want to do this?
John

I don't think you need an extra resistor. Remove the instrumentcluster and take a look at the backside of the fuelgauge. There use to be a little "switch", which says either 60 or 80 liters.

Good luck
