760 sputters the first few times it's started whether hot or cold. 700 1988

i think it's running lean, pulled the plugs and it appears to be lean. changed the fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs, air filter and some vacuum lines. what could it be? fuel filter? mass air meter? or the O2 sensor?

    Hey,

Its probably your fuel filter. The fuel filter blocks dirt and grime and it also blocks water. We just had (by the sounds of it) the same problem as you did with your Volvo as we did with our 92 940. We replaced the filter and now no problems.

    It may solve your problem....

    Good Luck

    Hello Harley:

The 02 sensor signal isn't used until the engine warms up, so it isn't likely to be the culprit when it is cold. In any case, though, you should measure its output when warm to see if it is good. Run the car till warm, pull back the black boot covering the spade connection in the engine bay (the one with the single green wire, not the two white wires which go to the heater). Using a digital volt meter, put the positive lead on the connection (leave it plugged in) and the negative to a good ground. If the 02 sensor is good, it should produce voltages that vary between about 0.1-0.8V at a rate of about once per second. Constant high or constant low are bad (one indicates rich all the time the other indicates lean all the time). There are good details on further checks in the 700/900FAQ in the FEATURES pull-down menu...

Have you ruled out intake manifold/injector seal leaks?

    Good luck!

i think it's something electrical, because after i restart it a few times, hot or cold the problem goes away, and it's fine until the next time i try to start it. although it seems to run into fuel starvation at higher rpms.

        Hello Harley:

It sounds like it wouldn't hurt to change the fuel filter, but I am curious what the tach does when it misbehaves at higher RPM-- a lot of things that people attribute to "fuel starvation" end up being electrical...

Keep us informed of your progress!

well, after further inspection, here's where i'm at. the car will sputter most of the time it's just been started, whether the engine is warm or not, until you start it the 3rd or 4th time then it works ok. i checked the O2 sensor reading, it's pretty lean, .1-.2 volts, even when it's working right. so i took a look under the car, main fuel pump and filter are pretty new, i've changed the plugs and FPR. i was thinking it might be the throttle switch or the O2 sensor. but i'm not sure of what could be making it run so lean....lets review what effects the mixture in this car...AMM, O2 sensor, throttle switch, FPR.....could the ignition system have anything to do with it?
