Anyone have a axle bushing tool for rent? 200 1985

After checking the price to replace the two overworn back axle bushings on my 1985 244, I decided to do the job myself. I expect it to be a challenge but knowing I have access to this site and the many knowledgeable Volvoites helps immensely.

I put the rear end up on ramps tonight and slightly loosened most of the bolts (I won't be driving it until I'm done with the job) and will go down to Sears this weekend and get the 3 1/2 ton jack and stands.

I would like to have the tool by next weekend if possible and if there is no tool available no problem as I figure I can buy the tool from IPD or whoever and possibly rent it out when I'm done with it.

I have some questions already:

1. I want to use some ramps up front and jack stands in the back to save from buying 4 stands. Do you see any problem with this? I was under the car tonight with the ramps and it seems the car was up enough in the air to manuever around.

2. Is it best to use the jackstands under the back jack points and have the jack itself barely touching the diff for added safety? I plan to make sure I have a backup or two before I crawl under Bjorn.

3. Where is the best place for the jack so it will not be in my way when I'm under the car. Coming in from the back seems the most logical but wouldn't it be in the way? Can I come in from the front or side?

4. I know I have to remove the sway bar, to get the trailer arms out but do the coils have to come out also. I see the bottom of the coil is bolted to the top of the trailer arm but I thought I saw a picture (Art B.?) where the coil stayed in place.

5. Is there a optimal sequence for removal or can I remove all of the members without problems such as the axle swinging in the breeze etc.? I would like to remove all of those members and take them to a automotive machine shop early next and have them ready to reinstall when the bushing tool comes in.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Sorry this is such a lengthy post but I'm sure I will have more questions. Thanks in advance!

For rental, ask Duane Hoberg, he rents his out.

    Or buy one from IPD

    Or make your own:

    1. Should be ok, you really don't even need to raise the front end.

    2. You will have to have jackstands at the rear jacking points, and you will have to use the jack under the diff to support it.

    3. I've always had it holding the diff, and pointing to the rear of the car. There was enough room for me.

    4. The coils should come out too. They are not bolted in at the top, so just remove the coil spring and the trailing arm as a unit. If you leave it in there, it may stay up there for a while, and then it may fall on you.

    5. I like to keep some things attached to the axle while I remove others. For instance, keep the torque rods attached while you remove the trailing arms, and vice versa. It will help you to work with the axle. If you removed everything at once, and the axle fell off your jack, it could snap the brake lines off.

    Good luck!
