960 wagon tail light confusion 900 1993

I just replaced the driver's side tail light assembly on my 93 960 wagon, and have encountered an interesting problem. Although my reverse light and turn signal indicator work just fine, the brake light/static tail light is posing some problems. Although I have tried different wiring combinations, I can only have one of the two functions at any given time: brake light, or static tail light, and not both. I also can't compare the wiring setup with the other tail light, as Volvo apparently thought it clever to use different colored wires on each side. If anyone has any insight, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks.

960 wagon tail light confusion 900 1993

Here are a couple wiring diagrams for the tail lights of a 1997 960. I'm not sure if Volvo changed the wiring between 1993 and 1997, but if they didn't these should help. If not, oh well :)
