greasing door hinges, is there a trick? 200

I can't seem to get enough white lithium grease into my front door hinges to loosen them up. I have just been slathering it in with my index finger 'til now.

Is there any way to get the grease down onto the actual hinge post which seems to be surrounded with/encased in metal?

thanks!

For door hinges, the grease gun is best, but for just about everything else:

Your local motorcycle shop will sell you an aerosol can of Chain and Cable Lubricant - grease dissolved in carrier solvent. Works on door latches, key locks (a bit messy), hood and trunk hinges and latches, gas fill doors and locks, window mechanisms, your garage door . . . everything that moves.

The motorcycle shop will also sell you a small clamp that will fit on and seal the end of a cable and will accept the spray tube that comes with the can of lubricant. This will alow you to force grease down the full length of the cable. I do all the cables on every car I buy (throttle, clutch, hood latch, emergency brake) and repeat every 10 years or so. I've run cables up to 25 years and have never replaced a cable except for one emergency brake cable that got nailed by road debris. The grease does not seem to attack the polymer sleeve found on the inner metal cable in some cables.

I purchased some white grease in an aerosol can from the Toyota dealer once. It was supposedly for door hinges. I didn't like it. It didn't seem to penetrate well and it dried up and blew/washed away after a few months.

Finding those built-in "zerk" fittings was as pleasant a discovery as was learning I could change the round sealed beam headlights without any tools.

Some model years have an opening on the side of the hinge for greasing. If yours has a small round hole on the side of the hinge, you can put a needle attachement on your grease gun, press the needle hard into that opening and inject grease into the hinge. I've had some hinges not take grease, hardened I suppose. I've also had good results with lithium grease in a spray can. The grease is dissolved in a carrier solvent which evaporates leaving the grease behind. This penetrates fairly well into a hinge. The spray is useful for lubing mechanisms inside the door, hood latches, etc. Can be a little messy though.

There is a coupler fitting available for standard grease guns to fit that hole. I got one from Mcmaster Carr (mcmastercarr.com) and did my hinges a few months ago. Seems like IPD had one in their catalogue not long ago too. The mcmaster part # is 1091K9 [Grease Gun Coupler For Flush Grease Fittings, 1/8" NPT Female Inlet $4.26 EA ]
If you already have a needle attachment you could try that first, I didn't have a needle, so I got the one intended for this use.

I always thought it would have been nice to put a grease fitting instead of just that hole. It would make for a much cleaner job.

To get grease into the fitting in the middle of the 240 hinges (if they are present) use the type of grease gun that has a sharp point and is activated by hand pressure on the back of the gun. The typical gun is about 5" long and has a tube on the business end that retracts into the main body when pressed against the fitting. It should be easy to find in your favourite auto parts store.

On our 700 series cars I have been using a penetrating oil which contains graphite. It has been doing a nice job.
