electrical connection preservative? 200

Is there anything to spray on electrical connections / wires to preserve them? Things are looking kind of fragile under the hood.

Pre-88 volvos have major harness troubles and you are going to have to replace yours sooner or later due to failing insulation.

But if you do disconnect a connector, spray both sides of the contacts with Caig Labs "DeOxIt", a cleaner/deoxidizer spray used by electronics techs to solve computer problems. Miracle stuff. Then treat the connection (with the sole exception of the oxygen sensor connector) with silicone dielectric grease to prevent contaminants from interrupting the contacts.

Why not the oxy sensor? 200

Steve, Just curious, why not the oxy sensor? I'm in the middle of tearing out my old harness and was planning to use dielectric grease on the connectors of the new one.

Dielectric grease is non conductive, it has a resistence to it. When you put it in a connector you do not want it as a path to conduct between the pins of one connector side.

The signal from the O2 sensor is low voltage, ~1V. The grease will noticably interfer with the low voltage signal.

If you're refering to the wiring harness, you're going to have to replace the wires. The early one's were designed to be biodegradable. Why? Volvo probably hired some "green" person who didn't realise Volvos were built to last.
