arrrgh! what is this world coming to? 200

so it looks like the voltage regulator on my '80 244 dl is out. (thanks, by the way, to those who helped me figure that out.) in the meantime, i'm leaving the car where it stopped (since it doesn't sound like it really wants to start right now) which is at the school i graduated from last year, st. john's college. i still have a lot of friends there, so i go up there a lot... it's a small school, about 400 undergrad students.

anyway, thought i could leave it unlocked, as nothing of apparent value was inside. little did i know... i came back today to look at it, and someone had actually gone to the trouble of going inside and unplugging the little cap on top of the stickshift with the overdrive switch on it and taking it! who steals such things? worst of all, i figure the odds of someone walking by who actually needs that switch are nil, so it was probably just some dumb kid who wants to cause trouble. they probably won't even get any money for it, unless there's some black market in these things that i don't know about. i certainly haven't seen one.

which brings me to my real question: how hard is it to find these things? where should i go? i think that the junk volvo down at the yard near my house doesn't have one... i guess i'll try ebay. any other suggestions?

-jeff

I'd pull the battery, recharge it, put it back in and get out of there.

    Jeff: where are you located?

There is likely a self service junk yard, such as a Pick 'n' Pull, which would be the ideal place to find such an item.

If you'd like I can dig up an extra switch I have. I'm sure it's in pretty ratty shape, and may need to be cleaned out.. but it should work. Yours for the cost of shipping.

Shameless plug: I've also got a few other items, in decent shape, I'd be willing to sell to a boarder or sbricks member (extra Virgo center cap - $5, extra K-Jet green fuel pump relay - $5, rust red sunroof panel - $25, repairable driver's side door handle - free, etc).

FCP Groton: knob and cover for about $12. I bought one and it looks good, although I haven't installed it yet.

There are a couple of Volvo junkyards that have web sites.

I personally go to the Volvo/Saab junkyard in Sacramento where I live. I can't promise you'd have good luck with them, but I have been using them and getting good service and fair prices for 12 years.

Now that I know and trust them, I wouldn't hesitate to have them ship me stuff if I move away from Sacramento.
    (800) 700 VOLVO or www.rcsr.com

They also sell a few new parts when they find a good deal they can pick up. We got a new CD changer to fit the S-70 (plugs in to factory radio) there.

The only wierd thing I ever got there was a half-dozen new oil filters. Half of them were Volvo branded, but the other three looked like Volvo filters, but were no-name filters made in Italy, and they weren't sealed with cellophane. I used them, but next time I'll be more picky. (Italy??)

Mann oil filters? Mann is the Volvo OEM.

I like the Ranch Cordova guys, but being a full service yard they are a bit pricey compared to what you'd pay from a pick 'n' pull (who also has a few yards in Rancho Cordova). I've also had good luck with Faraudo's in Santa Rosa (probably about 90 minutes from where you are). Their web site mysteriously no longer works.. I can only hope they're still in business.

That said, I much prefer to go to a self service yard. Much better prices.. but you can often run into trouble with some of the more common electrical stuff.

I just went out to the garage and pulled one of the Italian filters out of storage. It is white with blue lettering, just like OEM. It has instructions in English, French, German, and Spanish. Where it lists what years of Volvos it fits, there is a footnote that says "Not affiliated with Volvo.

It says "Made in Italy" but I see no sign of a brand name on it. Odd, huh?

Post a question such as "need manual shift knob.....". My guess is someone on this forum will have one....or tell you where you can locate one cheaply...I have seen them myself in salvage yards, but never needed such a part (my car is automatic).
