Alignment Question 940 900 1995

Took the brick (wife's daily driver) for a long highway drive yesterday (first time with me driving in about 2 weeks) and noticed that it was pulling to the right. She did not notice it pulling.

I checked front tires and they were sligthly feathered on the edges both L and R. Tire pressures all the same.

Prior to this the car ran straight as a arrow. There is no visible signs of trauma to the car. My wife assures me she did not hit any potholes etc.

So my question is, what else might cuase the alignment to go off so suddenly?

Is there anything special required(or to be aware of) to do an alignment? I read a post a while ago about "4 wheel" alignments.

Thanks

Chris

    Alignment Question 940 900 1995

    cb78:

Switch sides with the front tires. Put the left on the right and the right on the left and see how this affects the pulling. Be sure and check the pressure as Aye Roll suggested. I would recommend at least 35 psi in the tires. Slight feathering on both the inside and outside of the tire is caused by the the tire being turned by the steering wheel and the tire deforming during the turn and is normal.

      Alignment Question 940 900 1995

Thanks very much for the feedback.

Tires are all at 33psi. Front brakes done about 3 months ago (by me). New guide pins etc. But I'll check for dragging brakes on both front and back.

Also tires are unidirectional Eagle HP M+S, so I guess front to back is the only way to switch them?

Yes feathering was slight. Did not notice it on the rear tires, nor on my summer tires in the garage.

Once it warms up a bit, ie above -10C, I might put up on ramps and check the bushings and other items suggested. Hopefully this weekend.

      Much appreciated.

        Forgot to mention...Alignment 940 900 1995

I forgot to mention that the brakes were replaced 3 months ago becuase I had a stuck lower guide pin on the driver side front. The pads, especially the inner, were very very warn compared to the passenger side. Rotors were still ok.

So I'm not sure if this dragging of the brakes on one side might do something to the bushings and result in the pulling to the right. The thing is I don't drive the car often enough to notice it pulling especially only when driven in the city.

        Thanks again for you comments.

    Alignment Question 940 900 1995

A dragging brake, or one side of the emergency brake not releasing fully perhaps, can cause a pull to one side or other. Likewise a tire tread separation. Include in your list of possibles! -- Larry C.

    Alignment Question 940 900 1995

Tire pressures high enough? 30-32 psi (206-220 kPa) ought to be right.

There could be wear in some suspensions components but your car is very young to see that. Check ball joints and tie rod ends using a pry bar. There are 4 big rubber bushings on the big strut rods that go from the frame to the lower control arms. They're pretty cheap (Cone Bushings P/N 6819057)

Also make certain the links to the sway bar are not broken. Replace if there's any problem with these (they do occasionally snap right off).

    Good luck!
