93 940 turbo engine quits 900 1993

Twice reciently the engine shut down while driving. After a few moments the engine restarted the first time. I thought it might have been the thump on the dash that helped! The gas guage works and sometimes dosn't so it thought tapping the dash would confirm the gas level. There is gas in the car. The first time it happened I noticed that the odiot lights were not on when the key was in the K2 position. When I hit the dash they came on and the car started. Coinsidence? I guess so because it happened again today and no luck on the dash thump. I have called a tow truck and need help narrowing this problem down. Has anyone experianced the shut down condition. Where should I start.

Here is the latest....Using the onboard diagnostics I unpluged the RPM sensor and cranked the engine. It told me there was no RPM signal. I plugged it back in and it tested good. I checked the Radio suppresion relay and the coil is good, energized and I have 12 volts on both sides of the contact. Don Wilson's FAQ on basic operation of EZ117K led me to the ICU. I unplugged it and reseated the connector. Is there some way to test the ICU? Also, the next possible failure is called the power stage ignition amplifier. Where is this and how can I test it to see if that is the no spark cause. The ICU is ~ $150.00 and would like to know before I replace it if this is the problem. There is also lots of bad ECU info on the FAQ. Is this a possibility also? I have tried to purchase the Volvo service manual on the ignition but the Volvo web site says they are out of stock. Thanks for the help.

David

1) Fuel Pump Relay (see the FAQ)
2) Engine Speed Sensor (crank sensor) See the FAQ
3) Ignition Suppression Relay

In that order....

Thanks.....Here's what I have found so far. The fuel pump relay is fine. There is fuel at the injectors with plenty of pressure. I have 12 volts at the coil but no high side. The onboard diagnostics told me on the fists pass the RPM signal was missing. After I reset the faults and tried to restart there were no faults. Still won't run. On the sensor signal test the RPM sensor checked okay. Where is the ignition suppression relay? Is it still a candidate? Should I purchase a RPM sensor to see if that helps? Are the RPM sensors OEM only. The foreign car parts store couldn't help me. I know the problem is spark. More suggestions or direction please!!!!!

I think the relay Rob mentioned is the radio suppression relay - there's the info in the FAQ. I've never had to fiddle w/ mine, so I don't have any more tips than that.

I did have a stall/no start episode a couple months ago that was solved with a new RPM sensor. I pulled the code 2-1-4... is that the same one you had? Got the new sensor for about $50 from the dealer... I think the usual favorite online parts places (fcp, et al) carry it for a bit less. Probably a Volvo-only piece. Very easy to change... helps if you have long arms & long fingers!

Good luck & let us know what you find.
