Oil scraper ring question 200 1988

Got my new piston rings in and the new oil scraper ring has 3 rings....the old scraper ring had 2 rings.... The diagram that came with the new scraper ring shows 2 soild rings on the bottom and 1 mesh wire ring on top.( or I'm Confused by the picture).... should I put 1 solid ring on top , 1 on bottom and the mesh wire ring in the middle?

Thanks

Oil scraper ring question 200 1988

I have used the Grant rings before, and Hastings and others. You have to be very carefull with the Grant style three piece oil ring, or the engine will be a real smoker.

Install the expander (mesh) ring in the groove, and ensure the ends (sometimes have two colours of plastic or paint on the ends to identify them) are abutting each other, and do not overlap. Spiral a scaper ring (thin steel one) into place above the expander, with the gap of the scraper one inch to the left of the ends of the expander ring. Spiral the other scraper into place below the expander, with its gap one inch to the right of the ends of the expander ring. When positioned properly, the assembled three piece oil ring must be well proud of the piston surface, and be impossible to squeeze into the groove with just your fingers (unless you are a gorrila).

Position the gaps of the oil ring in line with the piston pin, the gap of the second compression ring in line with the other end of the piston pin, and the top ring in line with the oil ring gap. In other words, all rings 180 degree from the previous one. I know that many manufacturers go on about spacing at 120 degrees, and that's fine, but with the ring comressor being a fiddle for most people, keep them as far apart as possible. I have customer engines at over 100,000 miles and they still don't burn oil. In fact the rings tend to precess around the piston in service, and the gaps will pass each other as they do this. You just don't want all three lined up at any time.

Don't know if this will help any, but it is Volvo info, just for B18,20,21,23 not B230.

I can't help with uploading to the Brickboard's gallery, I haven't done it yet. Could be there's a very strict limitation on file size.

For mine, I use my own server space and link it to the post. If you grab the Site FAQ from the HELP dropdown on the home page, scroll down to the "how can I make my posts stand out" section for the html code.

I figured it would be this edge view for assembly that might help, though I don't fully understand what might be in hand.

That cleared up how to make the "sandwich" but I was not 100% sure about the spacing of the end gaps on the oil control ring assembly, I've slept since the last engine I've rebuilt. I think all of the facts are out in the open now! ;-)

No kidding! Makes it look like the spacer goes on the top when you see the order they drew A, B, and C. I can't quite make it out, but the ABC inset pic looks like the edge view with the particular ring shaded.

I can't offer any advice other than my sense that the objective of locating the gaps is to make the gases travel the most circuitous route if they're gonna pass through the gaps, but my sense is often uninformed. Last time I re-ringed a motor, it was a 67 chevy and the oil ring, as my memory allows, was not in three pieces. It was the car we took on our honeymoon trip, where our filling station stops were mostly fillup the oil, check the gas. It did allow the car to last until the fenders rusted through.

I can see what you mean, that picture is very misleading/confusing/contradictory as to how the oil ring pack goes together.

I still think your right the thin rings on top, bottom and the mesh gizmo exp. in the middle makes sense......Anyway I learned to download a picture here....

Thanks for you help...You too Art

That sounds kinda strange. All of the ring sets I have used (never have rebuilt any Volvo stuff) on domestic engines have always had a very thin ring on top and bottom with an expander ring gizmo between them.

If they are a name brand part they may have a web site that might clarify things.

    Good luck,

The two rings you mentioned as thin are what I have too and the wire mess looking ring could be the gizmo you refer to...so what you have said could be the right setup thin rings top, bottom, and the gizmo exp. in the middle.

      Thank you very much

What brand rings are they? It's strange that on their instructions they would have both of these oil scraper rings on one side and it would be nice to verufy with the manufacturer that it is a goof in the documentation. Also, I usually install them with the scraper ring end-gaps 180 degrees apart, but this is also usually explained in the ring set documentation.

        Good luck,

        Justin B.

The manufact. is Goetze....I can't get a picture to downloaded to show you....but the diagram does show the thin rings at 180 deg.

Cool, that's the way I've always did them in Chevy and Ford V8s, Art's pics show how the end gaps on the other rings sould be staggered upon installation.

I have an 85 engine out in the garage I "acquired" that a guys son and his buds had "rebuilt". A guy dumped the whole car on my bro-in-law badoer getting transferred overseas because, although it ran great, it was a great mosquito killer! Smoked like crazy so he junked it and I snagged the drivetrain and put the M46 in my Turbo. One of these days I'm gonna tear it down and I would bet a couple beers the goobers put it back together with the ring end-gaps all lined up, or broke some rings putting them on.

            Justin
