Looking for Advice on buying a 1988 765 Volvo Wagon 700

Hi all I'm looking to buy my first Volvo Wagon and I wanted to ask for a bit of advice from all of you Volvo experts out there.

My question to all of you is:

Is the 765 as reliable as the 740's? Is there anything I have to lookout for specifically with this car? Do the turbos/ABS or airbags have problems?

The Details of this car I'm looking at are as follows:
1988
765
Miles: 120,000
Turbo
Regularly maintained by a Volvo mechanic.
Sounds like this was a family car.

Thanks

Don

    Run like hell.. 700

..the 760 will be nothing but a big drain on your pocket. But before you do, what did you say the seller's name and phone number were? :) :) :)

I've only had my '88 745t (183,000 miles) home for a week and a half and I couldn't be more pleased. Mine was also serviced by a Volvo mechanic and while that is no guarantee of anything, I'm glad to have the stamped service book in my possesion. It's a very smooth running engine, and overall the car is a much better ride than my '95 855t. Nowhere near as fast though.

I wouldn't have considered a car with this mileage were it not for the help and information available on this board. The 700/900 FAQ is priceless. I don't have any piston slap or oil leaks, and the radiator, water pump and turbo have been replaced by the previous owner. Also, the A/C has already been converted to R134. I bought it for peanuts and enjoy doing my own work so I think I'm set.

Look at the FAQ (top of the page, pull down "Features" menu) and you'll get an idea of what to look for.

    Good luck,

The 760 is exactly the same as the 740. Given that the car you are looking at is a turbo, it is the same basic engine as the 2 litre and 2.3 litre and the 2.3 litre turbo found in the 740's. The main difference between the cars are the optional extras. i.e. electric seat, climate control, etc..

starting in 1988 the 760 is not exactly the same as the 740 700 1988

but the only differences are the climate control, some interior bits, and IRS on the sedan.... oh, and I think the body style started to differ from the 740 also... oh, and I don't think the 740 ever came with nivomats

Whew, you said turbo, so you are OK. In regards to the turbo engines, just make sure there is no lingering smoke while idling. This can mean an oil bearing seal in the turbo. The noce thing about the 760's is that they have a better ride than the 740, since they have independent rear suspension. The only other thing when looking at these ages of cars is for the condition of the plastic, and wiring (wihtin the engine compartment). In Sweden a large percentage of the content of these cars has to be bio-degradable. If you live in a hot/warm state the biodegrading process starts while the car is above ground. Just my $0.02

Buy sub, that's the truth...I live in Florida and learned that the interior 'cement' holding pieces together is actually just wax...due to Sweden's tough environmental and disposal laws...needless to say, when anything falls off (glove box doors, etc), I use extra-strength 3M cement..DJ
