in-tank pre-pump mounting? 200 1989

I recently received a collection of parts to re-new the in-tank assembly in my '89 240 DL sedan. With respect to a few diagrams from a repair manual, I notice the pre-pump is typically attached (mounted) to the bottom of the sending unit with a bracket and a screw (also to connect the ground to the pump motor). I am missing this bracket, it didn't come with either the pre-pump I bought (scan-tech - FCP Groton) or the sending unit (FCP Groton).

Can I assume that the fuel hose that connects the pre-pump to the sending unit fuel line is not adequate to hold the pump in place? Should I expect to be able to re-use the mounting hardware from my original old assembly after I remove it from the car? Does this mount do the jo of correctly positioning the height of the pre-pump within the tank?

Awaiting your advice,
Thanks in advance.

Greg Mustang

As I stated in a previous post, the replacement in-tank pump I purchased from IPD did not have the metal lip necessary for the existing clamp to hold on to and the hose and pump slipped. What you can do that is incredibly simple is to get new high pressure fuel injection hose from any parts store that fits (I forgot the size, but take the pump with you and find a size that fits the opening, get a good clamp from the store also and clamp the hose to the pump and to the metal connecting line. No more worries.

Enjoy.

It seems to me kinda unfair you didn't get that bracket. Can't advise you to remove it from the old pump because your old one is most likely the VDO. It is different between the VDO pump and the AC Delco pump (ScanTech?). That happened to me too, but as my supplier was the pick and pull I had no one important to complain to. Not advice, here, but I felt somewhat confident letting it hang from the pipe; the fuel line I used seemed to be very firmly attached without clamps. Been about 10K of daily driving now... I have some drawings from the green manuals and perhaps a photo or two if you're wondering what that bracket looks like.

Working with a failing memory here but...

Is it possible that the replacement prepump is the one for the 740? It would be considered an upgrade on the 240 or at least on the older ones (early 80's). The difference I found when replacing one in an 82 GLT was that the 740 prepump did not have the ridge in the middle that allowed the 240 pump to be "held" with the bracket. The 740 pump would have ended up being supported with just the connecting hose. I put a hose clamp around the 740 pump to serve as a weight bearing edge on the bracket. Perhaps some variation on that theme will work in your case.

Hi Greg:

You can re-use the mounting bracket that was used to hold the old pump. Once you get in there you will see how everything is held together. Very easy to take apart and put back together, just a few screws as I remember.

Probably a good idea to replace the rubber hose between the pump and the pick-up tube as these tend to de-grade and leak.

Hope this helps.

Jerry

Greg pointed out to me on a previous Post that he could not find that in-tank hose for sale from Groton or any other mail order. I believe he said the dealer only would sell it as a full sending unit assy. Is there a source to buy the in-tank hose?

NOTICE:

When I received the pre-pump (Scan Tech) from fcpGroton THE BOX CONTAINED THE SMALL HOSE. It lloks as though it is just a peice of regular hose line, seeing as it is probably more than 2 inches long (i.e. needs to be cut down).

The dealer wants 20$ for 1 meter of hose (likely just regular hose). For that money I got the hose as well as the replacement pre-pump.

Thanks and take care,
Greg

Don't depend on the hose alone. Your existing mounting should fit the replacement pump. The mounting will hold the pump in the proper position.
