Ball joint headache..... 200 1991

Hi everybody,

I'm in the middle of replacing many things on the front end of my car (Tie rod ends, struts, upper strut mount, ball joints, etc.) and i've run into a small problem when attempting to reinstall my balljoints. Whenever I try to turn the nut to reattach the balljoint to it's mount that reattaches to the strut, the entire stud coming out of the balljoint rotates. I can't seem to come up with a good way to prevent the balljoints from rotating. I've tried pushing it forward with my hand, a C clamp, and various other approaches, all unsucessfully. I don't know if it matters, but my car is a 91' 240 with 205k miles, and I'm installing a TRW brand ball joint. If anyone has any insight on how to accomplish this, I would really appriciate it.

I'll try it with a vice tommorow at my uncle's house. Thanks again for all of the advice.

    Ball joint headache..... 200 1991

    Hi Ben:

I replaced a ball joint today. I placed the 4 bolt holder horizontal in my vise. I placed a piece of wood under the ball joint. As I levered/pressed the wood, (2 X 4), against the bottom of the ball joint I was able to tighten up the nut. Worked great.

    Good luck.

    Jerry

Hmmm, sounds like everybody is trying to make this waaay too dificult. I've never changed the ball joints on my Brick but on other vehicles you just line up/start the stud into the hole and jack the lower control arm up until there is weight on it and the stud ain't goin' nowhere.

      Just my .02...

A little hand pressure and a impact wrench works good too.

    It's quite easy with a bench vise. 200 1991

I have attached a picture below showing you how to jam it between a vise. Be careful not to damage the rubber boot and the thread. It's pretty easy from them on....

The URL is http://www.geocities.com/sirmebes/ball_joint.jpg, incase the pic doesn't come up.

    Cheers,

Funny thing, I`ve just completed some of the same work this past week. What I did was put the unit in a vise and I also used the old nut from the old balljoint. A vise will brace the rotating balljoint by a 1/4 turn then hold it so you can tighten the nut to the 4 bolt mounting plate. Hope you or someone you know has a vise-its a great third hand! Hope this helps-good luck, don`t forget to torque.
