940 and 740 problem; no car now 900

Very cold here in N.W. Ohio and started my 210,000 mile 86 740 a couple of days ago and ran very rough. Stalled and now turns over with short bursts of ignition, but no start. Ran fine day before; no warning. This car has newer distributor and fuel pump relay.

Now, today my 200,000 mile 91 940 (my last line transportation) wants to quit when giving it gas. In part can rev it up with no problem, just when in drive it acts up. This car has newer fuel pump relay, distributor, radio suppression relay, air filter and fuel pump regulator.

Does anyone have any suggestions. On the 740 I am going to check fuel and spark for starters (as well as plugs), but don't know where to begin on 940 problem.

Thanks for any immediate help. Need car for work.

Both cars, but especially that 740: check all connectors. I've had similar sounding problems when the crankshaft position sensor had a dirty/corroded connector.

The 940: exactly in what way does it "act up"?

      Thanks for the response.

As for the 940, it wants to die as turbo boost kicks in. Almost like flooding, but don't see black smoke behind me. I had a new power stage I was keeping as a spare, so put that on but did not help. One other thing did not mention in the first post, I also put new orings on the injectors a couple of months ago.

I just got the 740 (non turbo) running. Would not idle and acting like not running on all fours (so to speak). Kept it running at higher ( very rough) speed and finally smoothed out (like someone turned on the switch) and now purrs as usual. Noticed gauge showed I was very low on gas, so maybe water vapor or something with this cold weather. I'll go fill'er up. Never had this happen before in cold with low gas level. About two months ago put new distributor (with new hall effect) on, so figured that was not the problem (although firewall connector would have been worth considering).

Thanks for any help on 940

        wiring harness? 900

Your 740 problem sunds like mine. I had a problem with power to the starter - replace a corroded and bare wire to the starter solinoid and cleaned up the grounds and now it starts OK, but will not go into high idle mode. I have to hold my foot on the accelerator to provide high idle while it warms up, then it runs great. I'm sure my monkeying with the wiring harness is the cause but it's been so cold here I haven't wanted to try to troubleshoot. I'm new to fuel injection (had a b21a before this), but I assume there's probably the electrical equivalent to a fast idle cam that is malfunctioning.

I hear ya. I worked about 4 hours in garage, but at 15 deg no fun. I have an 85,000 btu convention heater but when gets this cold does little to heat the floor area.

I put new battery cables on a while back, but I'll check other connections. It could be the idle control valve sticking also, but seems like was a fuel problem, like moisture since OK now.

          Thanks

On both cars, you might try a bottle or two of gas line de-icer. Cold weather, low gas, and sitting are a recipe for water (ice) in the fuel system. Normally good quality gas deals with bit of water, but if you leave the tank low and it's very cold, it may not.

Be sure you get gas line de-icer meant for fuel injected vehicles.

Thanks for the tip. I run 89 octane in the 740 anad 93 octane in the 940. I'll buy the gas line deicer tomorrow and give it a try.
