Converting a 242GT to a B21FT... 200 1980

Would doing such a thing be sacrilegious or (for you Simpsons fans) sacrilicious? I'm talkin' engine transplant here.

I love the 242 models, especially the 242GT although I also like the 242T for its looks, but love it for its power. I think if either came across my path for a reasonable price I would jump on it.

Back to the question at hand: How much work are we talking about here? And how much would the collector value be degraded (or upgraded)? What would a decent B21FT cost me?

Interested in your feedback/opinions.
Bean

I just listed my 78 242 GT for sale in the classified if you are looking for a rust -free GT. I would recommend that you look at tweaking the original engine of the GT to keep it as original as possible. You can put a more aggressive cam in it for example. Email me or call if you want to discuss my 78 GT. I will also trade this car (WITH CASH) for a nice 92-93 240 or a nice 940. Good luck, I think you are focusing on a great car (the 78-80 GT). Very rare, great looking and the most fun Volvo to drive.

    Bean,

It's a really interesting conversion and I have seen several done. Swapping the engines is the easy part. Changing out the wiring harness, computer, etc is more time consuming. As you already know, everything is in a different location (air box, coolant overflow, etc). Put the donor and recipient car side by side and take your time. Attention to minute details will pay big dividends in the end.

Yes, it would be a great upgrade adding to the value. I am going to do the same to mine and have the engine (B21FT) already, acquired from a turbo that was restored and wrecked. Definitely go for it and take advantage of the huge interchangeability of 240s. If you go to a B230FT you have to deal with the rear distributor but that can be done as well.

    Hi,
Only a total originality purist would be upset with all that power in a lighter car. I think it's great. Personally, I've seen Bertone 262 models with B21FT power. It helped the value of the car in my opinion. It's a complete bolt in process. You probably want to upgrade the fuel pump as well but it all bolts on. The best way is to buy a doner. I pick up turbo parts cars in NJ for very fair prices. Buy a complete car and move the parts over. Refurbish as necessary and you'll have a turbo GT. This is a serious amount of work involved but it has been done.

Have to get one of the R sport gauge clusters. That would be really nice.
    Wish you well.
