I am in the middle of changing the timing belt an my 93, when going to remove the crank seal, I noticed an 8mm x 16mm dowel pin laying in the ottom of the timing belt cover, I have been searching for a location for this but cant seem to find it. What is it for???

Thanks,

That sounds like one of the spacer bushings for the timing belt cover. The dumb covers crack after a while and the bushings can fall into the lower cover when you remove the upper cover.

The worst part of it is, if you're putting the cover BACK on and you don't notice that the bushing falls out into the lower cover, along with that brand new belt you just gave it.

I have done that before on my own car. ANd I'll tell you, when the timing belt broke (with 150 miles on it) because of that dumb bushing, I was somewhere near Cornfield, IL. That little bushing cost me $300 for a new timing belt and a hook. And the belt WAS new.

Don't risk putting that thing back in, if the surrounding plastic from the bushing has disintegrated too much. Just put a washer on the head of the bolt to hold against the plastic of the timing belt cover, or forget the bolt (if it's the center bolt) and put the timing belt sticker over it so that the dust stays out. YOu don't need the small center bolt--the screw and the other two bolts hold the cover just fine.

nope, its a solid dowel pin, I'm not sure what the heck its for, I'm going to install the crank seal snoop around somemore and then check back.

Tech's helper, cleaning the cylinder block, aligning the new gasket: "Did you see what happened to that other pin??"

"Nah, probably stuck in the head when we sent it out. Gone now."

        A 93??

(No, I don't pretend to have had the head off of a B230 yet.)

I am working on a waterpump/timing belt change on our 745T this morning. I have it half finished and I just went down to look at what it might be you are referring to. The only thing I see that is 8mm in diameter (but much longer than 16mm) is the pin the tensioner pivots on. It surely wouldn't be that. Is it a solid pin or a rolled pin that a bolt could go through? Could it be one of the alignment pins that the cover uses? Don't know how it would get inside.

If the pin has a hole then it would be a steel bushing for the plastic timing cover bolts. I can't remember if the timing cover has any locating pins, but look anyway. I just looked at a cam and there is a pin at one end.

its a solid dowel pin, the tensioner pin is there, it could be an alignment pin for the cover, just wanted to make sure it wasnt something for the alignment of the crank timing gear or crank pulley, but those are all keyed. BTW, the volvo tool for crank pully bolt removal is awesome.
