King Pins and Other Suspension fun. 444-544

It is time to replace my king pins. I have a set I picked up off ebay, but I do not have the tools to insert and ream the bushings. Is this something I can expect most competent machine shops to be able to do properly?

I also have a question about the threaded bushes that are used on the control arms(a-arms). The manuals states that when you fit these threaded bushes back together that you should "Check that there is clearance. This should normally be 0.3-0.6 mm." What type of clearance are they talking about? Do they simply mean the joint should move, or that there should be clearence between the bolt and bush? between the control arm and knuckle?

Thanks,

Mario

I had mine done by a local machine shop here in the Seattle area, and while they had a tough time getting the old ones out, it was a pretty straightforward job...

Inserting the bushes is easy, remember they're handed though. Getting the king pin out initially can be a bit of a giggle. I have a drift welded up out of a few bits of scrap to do the job.

The only special tool needed is a reamer. You need an adjustable reamer with a guide. Ordinary reamers can only do one bush at a time and you won't ream them inline. The guided type nave a tapered guide that fits into the bush not being sized, an extension on the reamer engages into it lining the two bushes up. Here in the UK quite a few of the older tool hire places still have sets.

    Pete
