Convert automatic to 5-speed/ 200

is it possible to convert a 1993 240 automatic to a 5-speed? I found no archived threads, so sorry if this is old, well-plowed ground.

It's entirely possible to do this job. Obviously there were 5-speed cars built right up to the end of production. You need the transmission itself, the easiest setup being an M47 (1987-up) true 5-speed transmission. You need a hole in the top of the bell housing for the crank sensor. An early one can be used if you break out the casting for the hole. A 1989 or newer unit will have the hole machined out.
The other items you need are as follows:
driveshaft from a manual transmission car
rear transmission rubber mount
clutch cable
clutch pedal + parts for under dash
brake pedal from the MT car
flywheel with the right number of holes: 40 holes or 57? Same as
your present flywheel has.
clutch kit: pressure plate, disk, TO bearing
pilot bearing for the end of the crank
probably figure on replacing the rear main oil seal while you're in there.
Figure on an 8-10 hour job for the home mechanic. Less if you've got a good trans jack and a real lift or a way to get the car up off the ground more.

i have heard it is possible, but not actually done it, yet. the hard part is fitting it correctly, by this i mean with the clutch (an AT has no spot for a clutch pedal) and making sure the new tranny is the right one that can fit it, most likely (i think only one) the M47 tranny. because this would be an AT to a M tranny swap versus a M to AT swap allow yourself a weekend to do it, maybe more depending. I do now know of any threads, i have only heard from others about doing it. sorry i don't have much for details, but i hope this helps.

see the faqs, it's all there. If your brick is post 89, then you'll need a fly wheel from the similar or later (has magnet for the rpm sesnor). You'll also need a drive shaft amoung other things.

Here's a web site from someone who converted a 780T to a stick shift. It's the b230 block, and a different body, but with the same goal as what you want to do. Maybe it will help give you general ideas.

Also, it seems to me there have been threads on this subject before. Check the archives.

The engine conversion posts may have been in reply to related questions, so I can't say whether the heading would be a good tip-off for what you're looking for. Just have to snoop around some and see what you find.

Good luck. If you do this, please post up your comments. I may try the same thing someday on my 1992.

Doug Harvey
