how to test the fuel pump (electrically) 200

Ok, so yesterday my car died while driving, and it turned out it was the fuel pump fuse.

I replaced it and now it gets VERY hot. The fuel pump is drawing more than the 6.5 amps (as per Bentley)

But the pump sounds like new, and the car runs like normal.

Today I unhooked the fuel pump wiring and cranked the car to see if the fuse got hot, and it did, but only mildly.

With the pump hooked up, solder melts off of the actual fuse caps!

Anyway, how can I test the fuel pump's current draw? I do not have an ammeter capable of over 10 amps. (and don't want to ruin the one I have)

I REALLY don't want to buy a new fuel pump if I don't have to.

What are some possible reasons the fuel pump is drawing so much current.

At idle the pump seems to be drawing less amperage. When you give the car gas, the fuse gets much more hot (smokes)

could this lead to a plugged fuel sock in the in-tank pump?

or what are some options I have, and places to check?

This sound as if the fuse has poor contact with the blades it fits between.
If this was really an over-current situation the fuse should blow long before the end caps melt down.
This type of fuse is prone to these problems. At one time BMW had a mod. which cosisted of a spring clip to increase the clamp pressure of the contacts on their fuel pump fuses.
Personally I would replace the existing fuse with a good quality line fuse that takes the modern spade type fuses.
You could measure the current draw by running the pump through a low resistance
shunt and measuring the volt drop across the shunt, see OHM`s law for details!
